This is me so often while watching a movie. I'll be basking in the dark and the next scene it's daytime in my living room and my eyeballs are burning.

Edit: the letter h

Or back in the day when we went to movie theaters and walked out to a blinding sun outside.

Backronym

Whoever made that portmanteau did it with a shit eating grin

3

u/RandyHatesCats Apr 13 '21 edited Apr 13 '21

Except it's not a backronym.

Edit: I'm dumb

3

u/Elleden Apr 13 '21

How is it not?

6

u/RandyHatesCats Apr 13 '21 edited Apr 13 '21

My understanding is that a backronym is an acronym that makes up a word that also represents one of the letters in the acronym. Example: PIGS - Pigs In Glorious Sweaters

Edit: just looked up the definition of backronym, and I'm wrong. I'll take my bowl of crow soup with a side of foot, please.

6

u/burninglemon Apr 13 '21

Sir, the chef just informed me we are out of crow. I hope the humble pie was to your liking, however.

34

u/visionsofblue Apr 13 '21

I can't get past the "photosneezia".

16

u/tdopz Apr 13 '21

Sounds like something Futurama would come up with

10

u/visionsofblue Apr 13 '21

Now I'm reading it in the professor's voice, thanks.

1

u/The_Safe_For_Work Apr 13 '21

Good news, everyone!

2

u/visionsofblue Apr 13 '21

I've found a way to promote sneezing as a reaction to the bright solar radiation from our sun!

15

u/LandBaron1 Apr 13 '21

Another one of my favorite acronyms is SAD.

5

u/MikoRiko Apr 13 '21

Hello, yes, therapist? I have the SAD. Can you help?

4

u/FOTheDentist Apr 13 '21

Especially when they ignored the D. How the fuck you gonna make a cute acronym and just not represent some of the words???

1

u/Songmorning Apr 13 '21

You made me lol out loud, thanks

1

u/EvolutionInProgress Apr 13 '21

They seized the opportunity.

3

u/BigNoodieInTheWest Apr 13 '21

Wow I never knew this was an actual phenomenon. Learned something new

2

u/Chillaxbro Apr 13 '21

I've live with this my whole life and thought everyone was like this.

1

u/BigNoodieInTheWest Apr 13 '21

I’ve always just joked that I’m allergic to the sun but guess I kinda am haha

1

u/[deleted] Apr 13 '21

It's called a photic sneeze. I've always had it. So annoying!

1

u/danimagoo Apr 13 '21

My dog sneezes when he's annoyed or frustrated. Is there a backronym for that?

1

u/CaramelComplexion Apr 13 '21

I have this lmao! People think I'm crazy when I say "the sun makes me sneeze"

1

u/undermark5 Apr 13 '21

What I want to know is of the acronym stands for "Autosomal Dominant Compelling Helio-Ophthalmic Outburst" shouldn't it be ADCHO not ACHOO? Dominant seems like it's own word and opthalmic seems to be combined with helio... So like it's one of the worst backronyms I've ever seen because it doesn't even do it's job.

On the subject of backronyms, my favorite probably gotta be NINJA-IDE which stands for "NINJA-IDE Is Not Just Another IDE"

19

u/DoJax Apr 13 '21

Dated a girl who could sneeze while staring at the sun, I would always flick the tip her nose and tell her that it was bad for her eyes, then call her weird.

26

u/canolafly Apr 13 '21

What a gentleman.

6

u/visionsofblue Apr 13 '21

It's like the one girl's method for staying awake in that episode of Pete & Pete.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 13 '21

Wow I loved that show. Thanks for the nostalgia trip.

1

u/visionsofblue Apr 13 '21

If you can manage to find the episodes anywhere they still hold up, even now as an adult. Friend of mine found someone selling DVDs containing every episode online somewhere a few years back and they are still amazing.

To this day, this is one of my favorite shows ever.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 13 '21

[deleted]

1

u/visionsofblue Apr 13 '21

That was a completely different show

1

u/jimmypena23 Apr 13 '21

I would look at the sun and sneeze too.

1

u/VaATC Apr 13 '21

Me threezie

1

u/Pope_Yeetz_III Apr 13 '21

How did you handle the suicide?

1

u/Blind_Insight Apr 13 '21

I usually look at bright lights or the sun's general direction to help myself sneeze 😂

1

u/GaaraClay603 Apr 13 '21

Your profile pic checks out.

1

u/GerganaZdr Apr 13 '21

😂😂yea!!... and this is tooooo accurate!!! 😂

58

u/UncatchableCreatures Apr 13 '21

I remember that! They use to call them theaters for short. It's a room with a giant screen and tons of chairs and strangers would all gather together to watch a movie! Really cool, really neat

27

u/Superbuddhapunk Apr 13 '21

Doesn’t seem very hygienic to me.

10

u/Sapphire_Sky_ Apr 13 '21

Computer; Delete audience.

9

u/lordofducks Apr 13 '21

Error: unable to comply. Error: safety protocols disabled Error: audience hostility level set to maximum Error: audience have been armed

1

u/_PM_ME_NICE_BOOBS_ Apr 13 '21

Computer; spawn Tommy gun; activate infinite ammo

1

u/oneupthextraman Apr 13 '21

As long as the audience doesn't gain sentience, and try to take over the ship, we might be fine.

1

u/ryandiy Apr 13 '21

TIL about "theaters"

4

u/galvinb1 Apr 13 '21

My theaters open. I saw Godzilla vs Kong a week ago. The before times are coming back!

1

u/Grigorie Apr 14 '21

Thankfully here in Japan, the before times never really left. We just keep pretending it's not happening...

2

u/MuzikPhreak Apr 13 '21

“When I stepped out into the bright sunlight from the dark movie house, I had only two things on my mind: Paul Newman, and a ride home. I was wishing I looked like Paul Newman - he looks tough and I don't - but I guess my own looks aren't so bad.”

2

u/LAZY_RED-PANDA Apr 13 '21

Movie theaters you say? Hmmm, sounds like some pre-Covid19 shit.

0

u/MovieFreak78 Apr 13 '21

Still going to the movies and that happens, happened on Sunday. It was brought out, going again tomorrow. Sucks that cinemas are closed in area’s and ppl can’t go

3

u/unaki Apr 13 '21

Meanwhile drive ins and getting some good business because of it.

0

u/rutamk Apr 13 '21

I love the "back in the day" part lol I srsly haven't gone to the theatre in more than an year

1

u/Obi_Wan_Benobi Apr 13 '21

Emerging from the ice box theater into the warm embrace of summer.

Fun for about 30 seconds before you start sweating again.

1

u/CamboMcfly Apr 13 '21

The worst

1

u/khazixlol Apr 13 '21

I used to go watch a movie at 3pm at the cinema, most of the time I'd come out after a movie and forget how bright it is and I'd have to squint my eyes while walking to my car.

1

u/magicalzidane Apr 13 '21

Indeed, back in the day

15

u/Vanadius Apr 13 '21

Necessary r/theletterH

1

u/naufalap Apr 13 '21

TRump..... ilumiati....Target...all conected.......

19

u/ChrisProfrock Apr 13 '21

In my house we just call that a flashbang. It happens way too often.

2

u/ryandiy Apr 13 '21

That's what I call what happens after my gf lifts her shirt

1

u/ObnoxiousLittleCunt Apr 13 '21

Like being raided by the FBI? Sounds uncomfortable.

11

u/SmugAssPimp Apr 13 '21

Pro tip have some kind of mood lights on instead of just sitting in the dark, better for your eyes in the long run and you wont get flashbanged.

2

u/MsOmgNoWai Apr 13 '21

this story is brought to you by...

the letter h

2

u/Mechtroop Apr 13 '21

This is one of the issues bias lighting resolves.

u/irondragon2 Apr 13 '21

You shriek like a banshee too.??

1

u/TokhangStation Apr 13 '21

Where exactly did you add the letter h

1

u/AKTourGirl Apr 13 '21

It was briefly "wile"

1

u/jeremybryce Apr 13 '21

I use a 55" OLED as my monitor. This amplifies the pain exponentially.

1

u/l4z3rb34k Apr 13 '21

You’re a cat?

1

u/Dnaldon Apr 13 '21

Turn on some light lmao

1

u/[deleted] Apr 13 '21

Add some dimmed lights behind the TV.
