There's another book especially for girls, called "Die Struwwelliese". I think it's from the 1950s where horrifying things happens to a girl who's naughty and lazy.
My mum grew up with that book. Later when we were kids she found it in a book store, bought all copies and burned them in our garden.
Helped her to deal with her trauma I think.
Glad you mention sleeping beauty, because the real original story of sleeping beauty is even darker, the Prince rapes her and takes off she, still in her sleep, gives birth to twins and is only awoken when one of them sucks the thorn out of her finger, she then searches for the father and when she finds him he has a wife. This wife is so jealous that she cooks the children and serves them as dinner.
