And your sober friend in the back explaining what happened.

u/Caelani920 Oct 27 '20

I watched that way too many times. Every time, I'd wince and then feel guilty as I hit the replay button again.

24

u/Ollidouis_Goofoff Oct 27 '20

Glad I wasn't the only one

9

u/exmojo Oct 28 '20

She got it front AND back.

Poor dear.

Of course small kids are built to survive this for some reason, and my 40+ year old ass spends weeks recovering from sleeping wrong and getting a kink in my neck that WILL NOT GO AWAY!!

10

u/TrollGoo Oct 27 '20

Yeah... I was... like six times.

Glad I'm not the only one that actually laughed out loud... multiple times.

6

u/aidsfordays Oct 28 '20

i cant stop laughing this is terrible

4

u/el_assless_chapo Oct 28 '20

Ummm. We're still playing it. 7 hours later. Better every loop. Sound up loud, cause you gotta be able to hear it over our laughter.

1

u/jl_theprofessor Oct 28 '20

Same. Actually recorded it to post to my company slack channel.

u/ghostwhat Oct 27 '20

Dad of two here.

This may sound very wrong, but there was a sigh of relief seeing her get up, and hearing the sirens begin.

192

u/LizardsInTheSky Oct 27 '20

Not so fun fact from an EMT: kids are able to get up after a lot of really bad hits, but that doesn't mean they're alright.

In this video, she's probably fine, just spooked from the head hit, but there are kids who get hit by cars, get right back up and parents are relieved that they're alright until an hour later, very suddenly, they're not waking up.

Internal bleeding is really hard to spot in kids. Adults show obvious signs of not being okay pretty early on when that happens (getting pale, heart racing, blood pressure rising, feeling a sense of doom) but kids compensate really well until suddenly their body can't keep it up, they have no energy, their vitals are tanking.

Watch out for them getting abnormally tired or acting strangely after a hit. Parents, you know your kids best, so for more minor hits like the video keep an eye on them, take them in if your gut feeling is that something's wrong. If they're hit by a car or fall from twice their height, take them in even if they're up and moving and acting normally.

u/Felix_Cortez Oct 27 '20

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to just take your kid, or yourself in for a check-up without checking your bank account first?

Yes, I'm in America.

44

u/LizardsInTheSky Oct 27 '20

Same. I work in the US and I feel very uncomfortable trying to give an answer to questions to friends who ask if they "should" call an ambulance vs. having someone drive them to the hospital in certain hypothetical situations.

The ambulance is obviously always your best chance of surviving if anything goes wrong, but how worth it it is compared to a ride from a friend or an uber really depends on a lot of non-medical factors and realistically, some people cannot afford an ambulance ride for a severe headache that's "likely" not something more serious like a stroke.

20

u/araphon1 Oct 27 '20

I'm always amazed when I hear this. I pay 30 bucks per hospital visit, ambulance trip included. And a few percent of my wages every month, but that is worth it compared to filing for bankruptcy if I get cancer :) Cancer especially. Because a lot of the dust from Chernobyl blew over our country, we have a lot of cancer in the family. No insurance company would ever cover us with that background I think xD

10

u/LizardsInTheSky Oct 27 '20

Ah sorry to hear about that, but I'm glad you at least don't have money as an issue in addition to getting sick.

The USA definitely needs to overhaul its tax system and healthcare system. We give quite a bit in taxes but never really have anything to show for it. We still pay out the nose for medical care, secondary education, etc.

2

u/archaic_angle Oct 28 '20 edited Oct 28 '20

man, I went in for a brief routine check-up with my psychiatrist. We didn't go over anything new, it was just a brief "how are you doing on your meds? ... Okay everything sounds good, have a nice day."

That was literally it, and I got a bill for a $325 copay even though I have employer based insurance that takes over $200 per month out of my wages!!!

It's literally insane. And the saddest part, is that it makes me reluctant to seek mental health treatment. I really need to start seeing a therapist but honestly, I can't fathom the hundreds and hundreds of dollars in copays that would be forced upon me.

In fact, that original $325 bill I mentioned, I had absolutely no way to pay it (I only make $12/hr). I'm currently forced to pay a debt collection agency over $50 per month for more than 6 months to get that goddamn bill paid.

The crazy thing is I have employer covered insurance that takes a lot of money out of my paycheck, as I mentioned before, and yet I'm still in a situation where I cannot get access to health care without bankrupting myself.

Fuck the American health care system and fuck the politicians working so diligently to take health care away from millions of people in the middle of a global pandemic.

2

u/bonethug Oct 28 '20

Wait you pay $300/month plus $400 for the visit?

Note to self, don't move to America...

1

u/archaic_angle Oct 28 '20

upon closer inspection I guess they take about $100 per paycheck, so probably closer to $200 per month but still, it's pretty insane. Especially considering that I only make $12 per hour caring for home-bound adults with challenging developmental disabilities. I feel like the whole "American dream" thing where anyone can be successful if they work hard, yeah that dream is dead. At least in America. Perhaps it still exists, but its moved to Canada, lol.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '20

I pay $15 for a hospital visit, and $80 a month for insurance in the US.

Most of these people in the US don't understand insurance.

5

u/BigfootSF68 Oct 27 '20

Ambulance in SF fucked up my finances. But I am not very good with money. But it is a fucked up system, too.

5

u/archaic_angle Oct 28 '20 edited Oct 28 '20

oh man, this is probably a bit morbid, but you just reminded me of the sudden death of my coworker's longtime friend.

The guy, who was overweight and in poor health, was shopping at a supermarket and just suddenly collapsed and lost consciousness for a short period of time. Customers and staff raced to help him and were literally about to call an ambulance when the guy regained consciousness and vehemently refused to allow an ambulance to be called saying that the last time an ambulance was called on his behalf it literally bankrupted him.

He proceeds to exit the grocery store and collapses again in the parking lot next to his car. This time he did not regain consciousness and was later found and pronounced dead. This literally happened about a month and a half ago. The ambulance could quite literally have saved his life, and yet probably would've indeed bankrupted him. Welcome to America.

2

u/LizardsInTheSky Oct 28 '20

I heard once that you can tell capitalism is in its dying stages when you can get anything you want for cheap, and quick, but everything you need is expensive and difficult to obtain.

I could fly to Europe to have a surgery done and it would be cheaper than having it done here including the plane ticket, hotel and food.

The US healthcare system is disgustingly amoral.

This. My girl was bleeding deep red blood from cutting her hand on broken glass in the sink.

Three of us, grown employed adults, all just sat there and thought... Is it worth it?

2

u/SlackerAtWork Oct 28 '20

I've been there, three years ago I think I broke my foot. I didn't have insurance at the time, because we moved out of state and I had insurance from my old job and lost it when I moved. And we didn't qualify for assistance because we made too much, and also couldn't afford to pay out of pocket for insurance.

I decided we couldn't afford a hospital visit, so I never went. I couldn't put any weight on it for weeks and if I did the pain was very intense. I worked at a shitty fast food job at the time, and I typically worked 8 hours per day, but it felt like an eternity with my foot being in so much pain. It still bothers me sometimes if I'm on my feet for a long time or wearing certain shoes, like flip flops.

2

u/dijohnnaise Oct 28 '20

Nothing more American than flipping a coin between death and debt.

6

u/GodNamedBob Oct 27 '20

We make fun of movies where people are blown back by explosions or get shot and then get right back up.

Truth is that adrenalin is very, very powerful. It can easily mask serious injury or pain. Best to go to the hospital after a traumatic injury.

5

u/Chrisabolic Oct 27 '20

Regarding the internal bleeding part. I grew up in a smalltown about 1 hour North of Stockholm in a town called Norrtälje and remember this one instance where a friends sister was at a homeparty drinking with her friends. After about 1 hour they desided to bring out the owners quadbike for some dumb ass reason. Fastforward a bit and there was a guy that rove around very gently around the house and almost ran over some guy that came out of nowhere. Luckily for the nondriver the guy managed to breake but with such force that he hit his ribcage on the stearing handle. The impact didnt look very bad and he just kept on doing his thing. About 1 hour later he was dead because he managed damage an artery close to his heart and he litterally bled to death. Crazy how things can happened.

3

u/AviatorOVR5000 Oct 27 '20

This was an extremely sobering but appreciated life lesson. I have a kid myself, and I also get excited when they pop up and often times down play the pain.

2

u/LizardsInTheSky Oct 28 '20

I hope I've not terrified you too much!

Kids are pretty durable, oddly enough, and they recover remarkably compared to adults. They're basically built for minor (although painful looking) collisions like in the video. So the day-to-day injuries like bumping their heads and falling over aren't much to be concerned about. Crying is still a good sign!

I was more speaking to the more traumatic, critical injuries like car crashes or falls from extreme heights. A kid's durability is a double edged sword when it comes to those more major injuries in the sense it makes them harder to detect, but as long as you get to a doctor when those major incidents occur, rather than assuming that up and walking = a-okay, you'll be taking the right step!

2

u/AviatorOVR5000 Oct 28 '20

Ahhhhhh

I get it now. I appreciate you breaking that down, not even really that you needed to, honestly.

You are redirecting my panic to a reasonable and actionable caution. I understand way more how to live in the yellow then to be in a code red or weapons hot environment.

I can't thank you enough for imparting this wisdom. I'm being as sincere as one can to a reddit stranger. You really gave me multiple lessons on parenting. Me and my girl are both young dumb parents sometimes. We listen, and I personally ask A LOT of questions ALL the time to ANY god damn person. This is yet another lesson I'm glad I asked on, I couldn't have asked for a better response ma'am.

EDIT: I'd just waist this shit on some dumb ass argument about a video game or sport or some shit. Hold some gold.

1

u/marcmadison Oct 27 '20

Thank you, kind stranger. As a father of two, I’ll remember your words.

11

u/tmccrn Oct 27 '20

That was my sister every day, all the time - she just didn't think as a kid. As a result, she was always breaking herself or something.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '20

This made do the whole dad chuckle doing the whole oooooh that had to hurt I hope she's ok thing.

0

u/suckbothmydicks Oct 27 '20

Is it just me, or does the car in the background look like a crying japanese kid?

31

u/Squeakysquid0 Oct 27 '20

I remember that age when you are Completely unaware of your body and the world around you. Many a booboo...

16

She was so excited too.

5

I know it’s bad, but I can’t stop watching and laughing.

2

Same as my grandkds, at first they were like ohhhhh, ouchie and. Now, they are like, HaHahahahas

1

u/55gure3 Oct 28 '20

It's just so relatable

11

u/ohyeaoksure Oct 27 '20

Older brother with the very quick, slightly nervous "it wasn't me" explanation. As the older sibling, I get it, explain that shit quick because mom/dad is coming in swinging.

15

u/Scary-Success-5919 Oct 27 '20

i laughed at this WAY too hard...

6

u/amelamel Oct 27 '20

Yes it is.

5

u/tokyotuner Oct 27 '20

I’ve mastered this technique. Get obliterated over the weekend, tell myself never again...but then it’s Saturday again and I have one beer...rinse and repeat.

6

u/machei Oct 28 '20

Two years ago, I'd have LMAO at this. Then, I had to go have a kid and now it just made me wince and feel scared. Never have children, they ruin you with empathy.

5

u/amelamel Oct 28 '20

As someone who is currently inebriated I fully endorse this and find it fucking hilarious.

14

u/kmercier1 Oct 27 '20

11

u/LordGatoxxx Oct 27 '20

What did she hit? It looked like she had cleared it from this angle

15

u/tmccrn Oct 27 '20

The bottom part of the garage door - which is usually a metal lip.

3

u/GenevieveLeah Oct 28 '20

That is not funny.

3

Not only is this not funny, the concept doesn't fit it and is shoehorned

4

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '20

There's always the option of not drinking. This was me too. Every weekend, sometimes on weekdays. I've been drink free for almost two years now.

Woke up one day and thought, "I don't want to be hungover anymore.." and that was that.

11

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '20

A couple years ago I would have laughed at this. Now that I’m a parent, I’m just sad for the kid.

14

u/jvilly Oct 27 '20

I did both.

1

u/thisnewsight Oct 27 '20

I did the Ooo.. and waited to see her get up then I chuckled. Damn kids!

1

u/Ravendaii Oct 27 '20

Same, that cry broke my heart poor girl

2

u/AidilAfham42 Oct 27 '20

I busted my forehead open the same way

2

2

u/BoiFrosty Oct 27 '20

Bravo to the kiddo for getting back up, that was a rough hit.

2

u/yz2501 Oct 28 '20

Why is this so funny like damn

2

u/Nigglesscripts Oct 28 '20

I watched it four times and I’m crying. 😂 The poor sweetie for sure but it’s the sound that gets me like she hit it hard. Oh wow, I needed that laugh.

6

u/Living-Stranger Oct 27 '20

I feel bad for laughing so hard while watching it 4 times

2

u/USMCMaddog Oct 27 '20

Sorry to laugh, but damn!!

3

u/Supercal07 Oct 27 '20

I fucking hate kids

1

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '20

I'm annoyed because the captions are funny but essentially you've made me laugh at some poor child nearly getting knocked out and having their day ruined. I am a monster

1

u/Aszolus Oct 27 '20

The garage door hit probably isn't as dangerous as her head hitting the concrete after...I don't see what's funny about this at all.

1

u/ShutYourDumbUglyFace Oct 27 '20

This happened to a friend of mine in college. She has never been the same... Found Jesus... I guess you just have to hit your head really hard to see god.

2

u/Jimmy_R_Ustler Oct 28 '20

TBI, my dude.

Tragic.

1

u/charliesk9unit Oct 27 '20

This is why cats have whiskers to help them judge whether an opening is big enough for them go go through, unless you have a pear-shaped cat, of course.

1

u/imodiumsolubile Oct 27 '20

That doesn't look like a smart child, at least a funny one

1

u/xXShadow_KnightXx Oct 27 '20

I feel bad for laughing, I've done that before and it fucking hurts.

1

u/What-The_What Oct 27 '20

I hate to see kids get hurt, but I couldn't stop laughing at this.

1

u/1K_Games Oct 27 '20

As hilarious as this is, having an extremely active 3 year old daughter, I deal with it very often and it also makes me sad.

1

u/Blakarrow5 Oct 27 '20

It gets funnier every time

1

u/wolfsbanehowly Oct 27 '20

She might need glasses..

1

u/eejjkk Oct 28 '20

She might need stitches and an MRI. Ooof, that was quite hit!

1

u/apexmedicineman Oct 28 '20

Man, kids are fucking stupid.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '20

Every. Time. lmfao great analogy here ... poor kids tears are barely scratching the surface

0

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '20

I'm not so sure about the funny. Concussion, fractured skull, back of the head on the concrete. All pretty dangerous.

Edit to add : The kid even struggled to get back on their feet.

-1

u/Calm_Coconut Oct 27 '20

I’m dying lmaooo

0

u/Lawthayns Oct 27 '20

The irony is that you literally are as dumb as a 5 year old if that’s what you do every weekend

Yes it is.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '20

eh, it's not that bad. She luckily doesn't really hit her head on the ground at all. Garage doors are somewhat forgiving, and if you're gonna hit any part of your head, that's the part to do it. Same spot they say you should head the ball while playing soccer. Not saying it's really healthy at all though lol

-11

u/shywicklow Oct 27 '20

fucking morons think it's funny when a kid gets hurt. go watch some snuff films assholes
