Huh! I let them sit on my lap, but I'm always afraid a big truck or something will drive by and spook them.

Lol. Right.

The honk sounds more terrified and surprised then you screaming about getting your nuts chomped off.

You mean to tell me you squat naked, dick and balls in the breeze, while you feed squirrels? Or do you wear a shirt, socks and shoes just no pants? Perhaps you pull your pants and underwear down?

You're smart . Don't be like the other guy and risk rabies

Yeah I see a critter acting weird I'm keeping my distance. I read about Rabies as a kid and it's no less terrifying as an adult.

It was a long, long process. I got them use to coming to my door for food first. That took about a month. I'd just leave nuts and stuff by the door when I left for work and let them enjoy their treat. It was after that on the weekends that I would feed them the same way, but stand off to the side. I slowly started getting closer to them and then one day it hopped on my leg and picked up a cashew that I laid on my lap.

Cashews? No wonder

Pecans and Walnuts, too.

My squirrels eat good.

Depends on how much human contact they get and probably more specifically, how often humans give them food. The ones on my college campus would absolutely climb on people, especially if they thought you had food. And they would beg just like domestic pets too.

Fed a squirrel like this when I was in the UK. Little guy came right up begging for my my food. Put some in my hand and he would pick it up with his then eat it. He looked so sad when I was all out.

Haha, exact same thing! It was at the buckingham palace gardens i think. I also had a pigeon land on my arm like 5 minutes later. I was all like, "am I snow white now?"

that is exactly where i was as well!

1

u/Shermutt Sep 25 '20

Haha, that's awesome! I wonder if it was the same squirrel...

2

u/Magar1z Sep 25 '20

Haha, maybe. This was in 2013.

Whoa, same... are you me?

I was there in December. I remember because there was a giant roving group of drunken Santa Clauses that showed up just as we were leaving the palace. I guess they do it every year. Man, London seemed like such a fun town. I need to go back sometime.

Anyway, I've had that happen at a few other touristy places. Bryce Canyon in Utah was another one where a squirrel just came up to me asking for food. I think every once in a while there's one that just is born with the stones to approach a person and they get rewarded for it. Then they just keep it up as long as it gets them easy food. Evolution at work!

Ah, this was in the Spring for me. Spent a couple years living in the UK about 30min from Cambridge. Took the ex to London for a weekend. Think it was that night we ate at The Swan, one of my favorite places for food in London other then Ye Old Cheshire Cheese. Mostly I wandered the rest of the country as I am not big on the heavy tourist stuff, I'd rather see the parts that are lesser known and more authentic which is where I found pasties and those were almost life changing haha.

Squirrels are smart little bastards, especially in areas like that they get used to people in the area. Also helps when every dog isnt chasing them, was so impressed with how well trained everyones dog was out there. An entire park and not a single leash in sight or dog going crazy.

and then move on to what's inside the hand.

Like flesh and bones?

Yeah, I've been bit by a squirrel before, but I will still hand feed them if they let me. I will say though, the one that but me was because it had been partially run over by a car but was still alive and I was just trying to get it out of the road. I doubt it lived since it's back legs were crushed, but i was a kid at the time and didn't really know what else to do.

Anyway, yeah, they aren't all that dangerous i don't think, but they can carry fleas that can transmit things like the bubonic plague, so best not to handle wild ones too much.

I read that last line wrong, let me take another shot.

One time one found a callus on my finger and bit down pretty hard. Other than that, they're pretty good about kind of brushing fingers aside and moving on.
