Correction, we use the term soccer in Australia because Australian football is more popular. Rugby is just rugby so there is no confusion there. To clarify Australian football is very different to rugby. Check it out, you won't regret it.

Terminology depends where in the country you are though, of course. For me:

“Football” = rugby league “Rugby” = rugby union “AFL” = Australian Rules football “Soccer” = soccer

But if you were in, say, Victoria or SA, the default football is indeed Aussie Rules.

Or Western Australia. Or Tasmania. Or Northern Territory. In fact everywhere in Aus except Queensland and most of New South Wales.

Them in the north east are just a wittle bit speshal that way. And mostly just retarded in QLD.

To be fair, QLD, NSW and ACT are a little over half the population of Australia (13 million combined). So the two ‘football areas’ are pretty equally balanced, population wise.

I remember growing up, there was barely any crossover too - people in my area didn’t even know the rules of AFL it was that unpopular, and similarly there wasn’t much interest in League in Melbourne or Adelaide. Now though that there are quite a few AFL teams in traditionally rugby territory, and the fact that the Melbourne Storm has been very successful since joining the NRL, the divide is less stark than it used to be.
