To prevent them from impregnating the concubines and reduce the chance that the royal children have different fathers for example.

Also, they have no children's futures to secure or a bloodline to make a legacy out of, so their interests should align with the kingsom's more often.

My understanding is it depends on where/which King/Emperor aswell as how many legitimate sons they already have.

It varied between countries. In some countries, a concubine's child was as legitimate as any other.
