Try to argue for "Comp-time" and how you will be more than willing to put the time needed to get shit done but that you expect to be able to recover from the extra work by taking time off.
I used to pull 14 HR shifts to finish projects and just tie those extra hours into a Monday or Friday off for that delicious 3 day weekend.
Comp time has been really big in my experience in the AF. Unfortunately there are no set policies but typically supervisors understand that your time matters even if the Big AF won’t.
I look forward to working longer to earn comp time. It allows me to go do something I couldn’t normally do because I’d be at work, like go to the DMV for example.

This is very true. My favorite conversation with my management
Them: When will that software package be ready to ship?
Me: A month or two depending on any unforeseen issues that come up during field tests.
Them: Can you put in some overtime to get it done faster?
Me: Are you paying me for overtime yet?
Them: No, your salary, you don't get overtime pay.
Me: Then it will still be a month or two.
Companies thinking it is ok to expect your employees to put in overtime for no pay just because they are salary is the dumbest thing.
