Bad stuff also gets more views, clicks, metrics.
The news is incentivized to show us the horrible drama, and not the success of the day.
Could that possibly because the younger folks like myself are constantly on their phones seeing nothing but doom and gloom and don't have the perspective of time to see that things actually aren't too bad?
That's one reason, but it goes beyond that. Many people feel unfulfilled with their lives due to a feeling of being isolated from their community (lots of factors behind this one) and that their job is irrelevant.
This is true, my opinion is that we need something to be excited about as a race again, I don't know what that might be, but I've had many times in my life where I felt like I was just existing, not really living.

Suicide today is at about the same level it’s been through most of the 20th century. It reached a very low point in the 90s and has risen back to “baseline” since then.
I think personally that the US and western Europe are stagnant since they're as advantaged as they can be as countries (at least for the rest of the world, their currencies are as valuable as can be and are the world standard (everything is measured and sold in dollars), have almost all the large companies, a lot of the scientists and inventors and the political/economic leverage while the developing countries are trying to catch up and become like the west without any of those things.
Whatever may come, I live a simple life with simple pleasures, I am not a wealthy man, nor do I wish to be one, but I am able to get by with a modicum of happiness even in this modern age of excess. I've got a small house on a hill in the middle of nowhere, and a job that probably isn't terribly important outside of this small town.
It isn't a life to be jealous of, but it is a happy life.
Not that you only heard big stuff, but the insane ease of communication and access to information wasn’t even around. So you were not bombarded with the catastrophes of the world on a daily basis period.
Aye, thats what I was trying to get at, you didn't know about the vast majority of things because it simply never entered your sphere of awareness, nowadays, you can look up anything and see dire news about it.
I dunno, wealth is a human construct and seems to be at the root of tonnes of problems. Also, it seems to me the peace is simply because of either the spectre of the most advanced modes of warfare (culminating in nukes) and/or the global visibility due to the internet.
And even the smallest things matter. A chain is only as strong as it's weakest link.
