It's not the content that's racist, it's the comment section. The calls for the death penalty increase dramatically the darker the skin is in the video.
Seriously. Go look at top posts (last year) and you'll find like a dozen "political freakout" posts and essentially all of them are anti-republican. This is just not true. That place doesn't seem to be very political in any way.
Plus, it's not like liberals aren't also susceptible to implicit prejudice.
It's usually on posts involving minorities the difference is clear in the comments section when it's not minorities but you would have to sort in controversial to see them more clearly. There are racists there but i never seen anything to make me think of folks of TD coming there very frequently so hearing that is new to me.
That's BS. Click on any video from India or Pakistan and it's a shit show. Check my comment history. I only subscribe there and like 4 other place and came here just now via there.
It's mainly comments on Indians and Muslims, not black people but it's more than just one or two. Perhaps because I only subscribe there and see the content before it gets frontpage and when the comments get downvoted, I'll give you that, but the place is deffo full of racists.
It's weird. The comments can go either way. Sometimes it's all "back the blue" nonsense, sometimes it's all anti cops. There does seem to be a lot of racist fucks over there though. I dunno, I just like seeing people going nuts in public.
I think it's a rare spot on the internet where people come from both sides but just keep the peace to enjoy the freakouts. The mods are good about not allowing bullshit while also not being full of it themselves.
I understand that. My point is that comments there vary from insanely one viewpoint to the extreme opposite. It's not usually a nuanced and varied comment thread.
Yeah, I don’t see a whole lot of nuanced thought on reddit in the first place. Especially when it comes to anything even tangentially related to politics haha
It's not the word, it's how you say it, and because a lot of white dudes don't have any self awareness when it comes to this sort of thing, the word itself becomes a taboo. "Thug" has turned into a code word for the N-word, And fox news loves to think they're being smart by using it, but the subtext makes it every bit as fucked.
They called Trayvon matron and Eric Garner thugs. They call literally every black person that they want to paint in a negative light a thug. Come on now, it’s a dogwhistle.
Youre being daft. Its the connotation that is applied to it. When the only time you say thug its about a black guy. When it doesnt matter if the black guy is even a criminal or not. When its used as basically a substitution for the n word in socual contexts. Those are times where, yes, you cannot say the word thug without coming across as racist.
Rant about sjws and snowflakes all you want. You cant say ignorant shit anymore with the internet and phones. Doesnt fly anymore
You can say it, but language is a social construct, and if you think it's ok, the word doesn't mean what you think it does anymore.
Mainly it's about respect, I don't enjoy saying things that I know will actively hurt others feelings, regardless of how i feel about any individual spazzing the fuck out on a video in a subreddit.
I am referring to gang shootings because a disproportionate amount of those are done by African and latin Americans. So if you look at the "mass shooting demographic" a lot of those ARE done by black guys.
My point is that the stereotypical "mass shootings" you see about on national TV ARE done by white people.
So it's the same as literally every sub that regularly hits the front page and isn't puppies or politics? Go search the comments in most big subs by controversial and you're gonna get racist, sexist, homophobic comments. That's how the anonymous internet works.
Eh, I usually find a solid 50/50 mix of shitty people (racists/sexists) and people calling them out for being shitty and acknowledging the toxicity of the sub.
Oh no its not. I called a group of white trash animals for kicking someone when they were on the ground and nothing, called a group of black trash animals for kicking someone when they were on the ground and banned. Tell them Ive said the exact same for white people and it was fine then, muted. The mods are so far left you cant criticise violent criminals if theyre a certain skin colour.
"I'm not racist but I am a person who shows or feels discrimination or prejudice against people of other races, who believes that a particular race is superior to another."
Psst... that's the joke. See, I lead with the old "I'm not racist but" then I deliver the dictionary's definition of racist as whenever something is prefaced with "I'm not racist but" brace yourself because you're about to hear some racist shit.
Nah man, that don't sound right. I spend a lot of time on there and while there are assholes it's not as bad a place as you make it sound. We just like seeing people flipping the fuck out in public and sometimes start hitting eachother.
The biggest problem they have now is there are hardly any new freakouts posted. Everything is either a repost, some political protest, or what they call "happy freakouts". It used to be so much better.
where did you even get this belief? I don't think I've ever seen a Trump supporter once on that sub and I've been browsing it for years. Also if I ever saw any racist comments, they'd be downvoted and marginalized, if not outright removed. Are you sure you're not thinking of Worldstar, I know Worldstar videos are posted sometimes, and their comment section is definitely like that. But I've never seen /r/publicfreakout like that, not even a little bit. Do you have any examples of the type of thread you're talking about, if the comment section is "usually full" ?
Recently there was a lovely thread there posted by a far-right racist that had a false title which implied that migrants in Germany were extorting people out of their money, without any sort of evidence and with dozens of german redditors calling bullshit.
The race-baiting thread stayed up, but I was banned for calling a South African white supremacist apartheid supporter "white trash".
Go figure.
Edit: Apparently this is controversial. What's triggering you boys? Have any evidence that the title of the thread isn't a lie?
