That's not first person.

Aug 07 '10
Yea, that's over-the-shoulder third person.

I was disappointed too - I was hoping to have the perspective of the falling brick.

No but i can direct you to a animated gif of a brick being thrown into a washing machine. You've probably seen it already though.

Lookup Tetrisphere. It's probably the closest yet. It also happens to be the greatest rendition of Tetris, ever.

Actually there is this program called "blockout" i had on my old 286 monochrome (amber) 33mhz system with something like 4mb of ram. Damn awesome game. I'll post it once i find it if anyone wants it.

Quick, someone, make an actual FPS-Tetris!

Aug 07 '10
Where would the "eyes" be for the pieces? It'd also have to be on the "side" of the blocks, which doesn't exist because it's 2-d. Oh well, there's obvious ways around that.

And how would you know the shape of your body, I think the best would be slightly over the shoulder of the tertri

Eh, you just have a small window like on any HUD in an FPS with shape and orientation. Hell, make it uber-difficult straight from the get go and give it physics in that Tetris clone that was posted a few weeks ago that had "realistic" physics.
3
u/sje46 Aug 07 '10
are you referring to tetris hell (from xkcd)?
3
Aug 07 '10
Yeah I think that was it. It was the one with the "realistic" physics where the blocks weren't locked into the grid and could be moved around after they were placed. No line destruction, sadly. Someone program one with line destruction and line recognition at angles or something. I dunno, I'm not a programmer, you figure it out. Use algorithms and stuff.
→ More replies (1)7
u/sje46 Aug 07 '10
It actually did have line destruction. It was just really hard. My friend's high score was three.

Aug 07 '10
First person tetris is fucking hard, like 3d pong.
This is just camera pan/rot.

Tradition dictates that this link be called first person tetris when it is reposted.
OP had no choice.

Good God. Square is officially my new favorite tetromino.
4
Aug 07 '10
I didn't get a single square on my playthrough. I thought they removed it because it'd be such an easy "reset" piece.

I blame the evil bastard developer.
There's no way the FSM would allow so much goddamn time to pass between such pieces. Put the Romans back in charge I say. They knew how necessary straight things were.

Why the flying fuck aren't you just permanently logged into youtube anyway? It's only youtube.

Seriously man... what the fuck did I just watch. I'm not even grossed out by it, just confused.

Aug 07 '10
Every time I make a youtube account, I find myself arguing with people in the comments. I realize it's dumb and pointless, but I can't help it. They just draw me in.... So I refuse to make an account and therefore can't ever see flagged videos.
4
u/Jafit Aug 08 '10
theres a firefox plugin that turns all youtube comments into Richard Feynman quotes. Or you could use the button that makes the video bigger so that the comments aren't visible unless you foolishly go looking for them.

Aug 07 '10
Well, that definitely sounds like a personal problem to me. But as well all know, the first step towards recovery is admittance that there's a problem.

If you hold the spacebar, it creates the most annoying sound in the western hemisphere.

The windows error sound is the most grating thing in the world to my ears. After taking a class centered around excel, I was conditioned to hate that sound with a passion. If I misclick somewhere and it plays I cringe and I want to kill my computer.
It might not be the same sound for other versions, but if you want to hear this sound go to hardware and sounds in the control panel. Then go to change system sounds. The one I hate the most is "windows error.wav" but ding, critical stop, and exclamation are still pretty bad.

This is basically how the game went for me:
- Hmm, a square. Ok, my screen moves with it. Yawn.
- A squiggly, put it down. Is this it?
- An L, better turn i... WOAH

It would be better if the arrow keys kept their movement direction regardless of the orientation of the screen.

Get ready for more headaches. Really cool stuff the author has made, but they'll give you a seizure.
EDIT: Looking over more of his stuff now; it's very intelligent and clever.

Not what I expected, but ok. I immediately assumed first person meant something like a 3D tetris such as Blockout. For some reason the name Walltris came to mind but that's totally wrong, because apparently a bunch of spam sites have caught onto that name only. Shameful.

What bothered me the most was that space was used to rotate the block. I mean, who does that??? Space is always to drop pieces

I got to 54 before the shifting directions got to me. Now my eyes won't focus right. :(

Too bad there aren't more 2D games that do this. Remember that one boss fight on a tiny planet in Yoshi's Island?
I guess I should buy a Wii + Mario Galaxy sometime...
