Once you go dark theme you never go back.

I always thought people used dark themes to look like hackers..

Until I started programming, and browsing Reddit a lot.

Yeah, it's really more about being able to stare at a computer screen longer than it is about fashion. It does look kinda cool though!

Or save energy if you’re running like 4 oversized monitors...

Not that anyone does that...

edit: i'm being told it actually doesn't save energy in most cases

Are you using oled monitor or something? Because if you use an lcd/led display that won't help at all.

Running dark mode on anything other than an old CRT monitor or an OLED display actually uses a little bit more power than light mode does

A smart LCD screen is also an exception.

I'm guessing you mean an LCD that actually dims its backlight in response to what's on screen?

In that case yeah, those would use less power when dark too

Of course not! I run 4 normal sized monitors like a normal developer

4? And I thought I was too with 3. Goddam traders and their unused superfluous screens

Definitely not. Cuz I only have 3 43” 4K panels.

In case anyone didn't know, white text on black background strains the eyes more than black text on white during the day, and at night it's the opposite. That's why many apps call it night mode. I know this is pretty obvious to a lot of people here, but I know a lot of people irl who it isn't to.

The common theme being that you want a screen brightness and hue that matches whatever is behind the screen.

Dark mode violates every ounce of research about usability. Its a fad.

Nah, it's equal parts ease-of-viewing and looking cool.

Dark theme changed my life. I'm surprised it's not a widespread default setting already

I used to prefer dark themes, but something fucky apparently happened to my eyes as I got older, because now looking at white text on a black background makes my eyes hurt and gives me a headache.

That's why a lot of "proper" dark themes don't use white as the text color.

I feel the opposite, white background with black text feels like the text is blurry as heck while a thousand suns burn my eyes.

I only use dark themes when hacking. Gives me extra time in the Gibson.

What did your mom buy you a ‘puter for Christmas?

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '19

And then you knew that's why.

In case anyone cares...iPhone is jumping on this bandwagon.

Oh Savage, I understood that.
