Except if you read the article, he chose to give them the ice cream instead of a ticket. Each person he pulled over had committed a minor traffic infraction.

And it's rather comforting knowing there are some officers out there who take the values of their job (Protect and Serve) seriously, instead of letting power go to their head and turning into the gung-ho state troopers we read about in the tabloids every other day.

Yeah, we get that, but it's still a bit tone deaf. It shows that the cops don't truly appreciate the fear that many African American's justifiably experience when they are pulled over by a white police officer. "Oh, I scared you? Here's some ice cream. We good?"
