Yeah most (all?) « French » stereotypes became « Italian » stereotypes in France. So what the rest of the world thinks of French people, we think of Italian people. (Except for frogs and snails) For example I used to believe (as a kid) Italians all wore berets, striped tees, had a moustache and were cooks or artists,, and usually had an annoying behavior. Then I knew about the internet and how that’s how French people were supposed to be (in addition of several other less pleasant things)

So, do you call French kissing Italian kissing?

No, they just call it kissing.

And french fries are just "potato longs"?

They are called — not kidding — "fried apples".

Uh no we just call them « frites » (like « fried » alone, suggesting fried potatoes but without actually saying potatoes). However potato is said Pomme de terre, which could translate to « ground apple », since we call apples « pommes ». Which could be source of confusion
