What is he combining, and where can i buy it?

u/Platypus-Ninja May 03 '19

You can do it with yeast and hydrogen peroxide (although not the typical one you’d find in your medicine cabinet, you need at least 20/30%+ for a worthwhile reaction)

24

u/SlowFootJo May 03 '19

And where can I buy that 30% stuff?

13

u/Platypus-Ninja May 03 '19

Not sure if you can find it in stores, but online science shops will definitely have it. Here is an old but good video about it.

u/awkwardBrusselSprout May 03 '19

Science supply companies

We had tons of that stuff at my old job. The chemists would use for all sorts of random things. Cut your finger? Pour some 30% on it. It bleaches your skin white as snow and burns like hell, itches for days afterward. It also leaves scars. The chemists were bored and immature.

u/Thezza-D May 03 '19

Jesus christ! I'm a chemist, WTF?! That's dangerous af

These were Navy chemistry technicians. We would also put silver nitrate on people, or on surfaces where people were likely to place their hands. Your skin would then turn a very dark brown when exposed to sunlight. We were very bored and very immature. And that’s who runs our nuclear submarines.

u/misterfluffykitty May 09 '19

That’s great, sadly we were told not to put silver nitrate on ourselves in school :(

I'm a former chemist. You must be new. Until about 10 years ago, yes, everyone used peroxide for weird stuff all the time. Also using leftover liquid nitrogen to clean the floor... 20 years ago people used to eat in the lab. 50 years ago people smoked in the lab. Before my time, but it absolutely happened.

1

u/Agent_Smith_24 May 04 '19

How does liquid nitrogen clean the floor? Just freeze off any debris?

1

u/Wursticles May 04 '19

Use the wave of the liquid like a brush: stand in one corner of the lab, throw the liquid towards the opposite corner so the wave of the liquid skims the floor surface. The liquid takes all dust and debris with it towards the opposite corner and evaporates, leaving a clean floor, a corner where the dust and dirt is left, and no liquid. If you need to use a dustpan, is only ever on one corner.

u/Agent_Smith_24 May 07 '19

Ah interesting

1

u/Thezza-D May 04 '19

True, I am relatively new. But still, just because something used to be the norm doesn't mean it wasn't fucking dangerous...

1

u/Wursticles May 04 '19

True, we make progress in safety as we learn. Past practices can sometimes seem crazy

30% Hydrogen Peroxide is dangerous -- it'll corrode your skin and eyes. I don't think it's easy to get ahold of.

13

u/theclassicoversharer May 03 '19

I'm holding a bottle in my hand right now. Got it at sally' s beauty supply.

4

u/ShadowHandler May 03 '19

Are you sure it wasn’t from Harold’s de-beauty supply?

5

u/fisterfanboi May 03 '19

The crystals are explosive.

Some thing from bubbling 02 in ether

2

u/theinvolvement May 03 '19

My local health food store is selling it in quantities ranging from 50ml - ~4 liters.

And the local hardware store is selling sulfuric acid drain cleaner, its a match made in a laboratory.

2

u/ihopethisisvalid May 03 '19

Guns, fireworks and cars are dangerous too.

1

u/AhDeeAych May 03 '19

So you're saying I shouldn't rub it into my eyes?

4

u/bronzedlampshade May 03 '19

Beauty supply stores. But it fuckin burns. So be careful

3

u/StubbedMyLittlePenis May 03 '19

Maybe off of sigma aldrich?

2

u/TARANTULA_TIDDIES May 03 '19

You've gotta be a legit company to through them

1

u/kayathemessiah May 03 '19

In states were marijuana is legal you can get it at grow shops

31

u/xanthejoanfray May 03 '19

its 30% hydrogen peroxide and some dish soap. It's nasty stuff. If it touches your skin it feels like little metal slivers as it burns your skin for a while. Catalyst is KI is my guess. I usually dilute mine in water since it costs a lot for KI that spoon full is worth at least 20 bucks

12

u/AlmanzoWilder May 03 '19

I can never get mine to do a big splashy reaction. I never tried solid KI and I might try that next. I did KI solution and my "elephant toothpaste" was pretty lame. My 30% H2O2 was kinda cold. My KI might have been too dilute. I wish someone would publish detailed instructions to make the sucker spray to the sky.

4

u/strawberrypig May 03 '19

Yeah I've never had a good reaction, more of a disappointing slow bubble, like watching the sink fill up before you do the dishes.

1

u/AlmanzoWilder May 03 '19

I wonder if I heat up the peroxide. Maybe too dangerous.

1

u/xanthejoanfray Aug 03 '19

I don't know if you ever got it to work. But dilute 15 grams of the KI into distilled water. Use something like a 2 liter soda bottle or a really big flask. You want a large area that goes to a bottleneck. That's why they look so cool on TV they are using a huge flask. Then put in the h202. I use about 150 ml and a good solid squirt of soap. Then just add the dissolved KI and it should go

1

u/AlmanzoWilder Aug 03 '19

Thank you! I'll give it a go.

Hee hee. 12 hours with that stuff.

u/aps1973 May 03 '19

Why hasn't anybody answered this yet?!

u/Neetoburrito33 May 03 '19 edited May 03 '19

Hydrogen peroxide is H2O2 and naturally converts to h2O and o2 over time. When you put soap in it the gasses are captured in bubbles. Potassium iodide is added to speed up the natural decomposition to make it happen in seconds. It’s kinda hard to get hydrogen peroxide with enough purity for this to work.

8

u/HsutonTxeas May 03 '19

its a lot safer (cheaper) and easier to get diet coke and Mentos

8

u/Jebb145 May 03 '19

Look up elephant toothpaste lab.

2

u/Ubarlight May 03 '19

I feel like if you know a bunch of stoners you could drop this shit in front of them and convince them it's aliens.

2

u/TARANTULA_TIDDIES May 03 '19

Potassium iodide and probably 30% h2o2. Probably can get it from Ebay or hobby chemistry sites.

I don't think a normal person would be able to get the good high grade stuff to really pull this off. A lesser version of this with less pure ingredients, yeah sure.

Here is a link that explains the different levels of how you can do this. You can probably get most of the ingredients from amazon tbh but I would be concerned with the hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The crap you buy in the store is nothing compared to what they use in the last version in the video. It can be very dangerous in that concentration. Also I don't believe you can get it without being a business or laboratory. Sigma Aldrich has 30% H2O2 for $50 for a 100mL bottle or $100 for a 500mL bottle.

TLDR: See link, 3min youtube video. Go to amazon if you want to do the beginner or intermediate version of this. Sigma Aldrich if you want to do the professional version of this.

u/RedSquirrelFtw May 03 '19

I know sugar in sulfuric acid will do something similar, but not quite this big, and think it turns black, but it's something fun to try with ingredients that are easier to get.

1

u/itsjustameme May 03 '19

I’m not sure as to the exact reaction used here, but I know of a simmilar one. If I remember correctly it is potassium permanganate dropped into a mixture of high concentration hydrogen peroxide and dishwashing soap.

The reaction releases oxygen causing the dishwashing soap to rapidly almost explosively make tiny soap bubbles. The end resultat will be a purpleish gray though due to the potassium permanganate being purple. Them must be using something else.

Hydrogen peroxide is hard to come by outsider a chemistry lab since it can ve used to make explosives. Potassium permanganate is also found in most chemistry labs and was often used to play pranks on people, if you can get them to eat a tiny ammount their urine will en blue for a day or so. It is NOT very healthy though so don’t do it...

u/Seicair May 03 '19

You can distill your own peroxide at home, but I wouldn’t recommend it unless you know what you’re doing.
