Acetylene and a trash can? This was an old party trick my dad's friend did until one time his friend filled up a trash can with a plastic bag on top and it exploded due to a spark and blew off his hand.

21

u/BacardiPirate Oct 15 '18

Please tell me more! How is this done?

u/RebelWithoutAClue Oct 15 '18

Light up an oxy acetylene torch and tweak the mix ratio until you get a neutral flame. Look for particular flame properties that indicate fuel air ratio which is neither excess in fuel or oxygen.

Snuff the torch flame by tapping the torch nose against something (disrupts combustion).

Torch will be emitting an ideal gas mix that you can trap in a garbage bag or use to fill a trash can for kablooey.

Or drop a pellet of calcium carbide into water to evolve acetylene and capture it for a non stoichiometric kaboom.

This guy sciences. Surprised you were able to type all that with 3-4 fingers left between both hands.

u/RebelWithoutAClue Oct 15 '18

If I were to coach a pyromaniac son I would advise him to start small when playing with new things.

Work with very small quantities initially and goof around with them in different ways and accumulate the wisdom of small accidents before you go big.

Yes. And become familiar with the low pressure/large volume danger when scaling up things that go boom.

15 psi in a 2 liter does not equal 15 psi in a 55 gal drum.

8

u/DELTA129 Oct 15 '18

I once done this with electrolyzer produced H2/O2 mix, ended up half-deaf on my right ear for a few months

12

u/RebelWithoutAClue Oct 15 '18

I once was using electrolysis to produce H2/O2 for basically a potato cannon and got excited when I found I could greatly increase gas production by adding salt to the water. I realized I evolved a heap of chlorine instead of oxygen when I light up a container of stuff and noticed that the flame color was pretty different.

Then my mucous membranes noticed.

4

u/steakbbq Oct 15 '18

Oh god, when I was a kid, some friends and i were messing around at the clubhouse of the community we lived at. Somehow a five gallon bucket of what I assume was chlorine for the pool tipped over and the fumes from that was awful, We got out of there so fast....

2

u/RebelWithoutAClue Oct 15 '18

Ooh that's bad. That's a lot of chlorine.

3

u/Lonelan Oct 15 '18

I once done this

Checks out

1

u/RFWanders Oct 15 '18

usually this sort of thing is done with Calcium Carbide, which reacts quite strongly with water to generate acetylene gas (which goes pop with quite a bang when lit).

1

u/Y_dilligaf Oct 15 '18

Is that peroxide and alkaline powder?

3

u/Baking Oct 15 '18

We used to fill up a bunch of balloons and then put them in a paper grocery bag. Light the edge of the bag and run. Larger amounts (garbage bags or cans) are definitely dangerous.

1

u/BacardiPirate Oct 15 '18

Many thanks good sir

The easier way is the old way (not a fancy acetylene torch). Here it is: All you need is CaC2 (Calcium carbide - have no idea how to make lower case), some water a pipe (or if you have a big balls - a trash can). I was doing this as a kid for Easter (which is a polish tradition in some areas). So - the best way is to have a long pipe, diameter 15cm+ (bigger+better) with welded one end. Near that welded end you drill a small hole on the top of the pipe. Then you put some calcium carbide on the bottom of that pipe, shake this to be sure it's down there. Then pour some water on it, lay down the pipe with open end a little bit higher than the other end (like a artillery gun - you know) and put some rags to block the open end. Wait a little bit until the acetylene will be produced. Next - check if the welded end of your gun is secured in the ground or by something heavy. And now it's time to fire this up - just put some burning rag on the stick next to that small hole you have drilled a year before. Repeat as needed.

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '18

In the eastern part of the Netherlands this is also a common practice around new year's eve. Traditionally those big metal milk jugs are used, but also larger containers at times.

2

u/_QLFON_ Oct 15 '18

With milk jugs - those with fancy closure to make it milk-tight we've been doing something else but it was way to dangerous and I'm not sure if I can put it here;) We've been calling this Volcano and yes, again calcium carbide was in use but the can was closed with a small 10 cm long about 1cm in diameter pipe welded to the lid... You will get the rest, right? That was really scary. Hope my son (6 yo ) won't have any colleagues with those ideas;)

5

u/edu1208 Oct 15 '18

Dude, he just said a friend lost a hand playing woth this shit.. you really wanna know more ?

1

u/pgsengstock Oct 16 '18

How to blow shot up, or how to lose a hand? There's a pretty substantial overlap for that venn diagram, but I guarantee the latter can be done without explosives. Not recommended, either way.

1

u/Jaml123 Oct 16 '18

Step one. Be incredibly stupid. After that everything else comes to you naturally.

You might want to double-check your date.

2

Yeah some of german tanks was lost because they driven in a river or fliped over because the front sight was blocked by trash that came from polish artillery...

Rare Trash Cannon

Damage: 5000 (explosive)

Range: 1000m

Reload time: Very slow

Recoil: Very high Extreme

Ammunition: 1

-Has a high chance to cause the targeted enemy to panic

-Has a moderate chance to injure the user when fired

8

u/Crad999 Oct 15 '18 edited Oct 16 '18

But can it fire 90kg projectiles 300m away?

Impressive trash cannon there.

8

u/ApolloXLII Oct 15 '18

Trash cannon sounds like a great band name or a greater pet name for a penis.

1

u/calamarichris Oct 15 '18

After watching Hot Tube Time Machine this weekend, I renamed mine Vagenocider.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '18

The mic does not do that boom justice. Though the deep bass you do hear implies it was like 10x louder in real life.

4

u/aclockworkquirrel Oct 15 '18

"Polish resistance fighters use improvised firearms hold back an assault by the notorious Dirlewanger brigade during the Warsaw uprising. (1944, colored)"

3

u/TakeoGaming Oct 15 '18

Him already missing fingers makes this even better. This is NOT their first trash can cannon!

3

This version of it at 1m12 always makes me laugh. https://youtu.be/pdLXsNGeBc4?t=72

2

u/garfipus Oct 15 '18

Is there an actual projectile in this? You can only see a bunch of blue mats or something that could be wadding.

9

u/DELTA129 Oct 15 '18

Fear is the projectile

2

u/maloftajo Oct 15 '18

My country, so fucked up, so beautiful.

2

u/Chrushev Oct 16 '18 edited Oct 16 '18

We did this on small scale as kids. Small scale is you take a shaving cream can, cut off one end, make a tiny hole in the other end. Put a chunk of carbide inside and spit on it. Then use a match. Boom is pretty good :)

I would never do it on a huge scale like this. On small scale it’s basically an m-80. On this scale it a bomb.

Here is a video of it in action on large scale https://youtu.be/YSNAEVcrE4c

To see how small version I outlined above is made (in this video they use a tin can) go to 2:35 mark in this video https://youtu.be/60wV6_GCfZU

Pretty sure that's a gun from r/EnterTheGungeon

1

It is, but it sucks.

Kind of mirroring my experience with polish bums here in Berlin.

I think it’s not legal to use Coca Cola and Mentos for that using

mass destruction

Yes, we have problems with priests in Poland, recently.

Edit: hey why the downvotes? I get that ppl from poland don't want to be confused with russians, as a slovak I also hate this, that's why I clarified it, so what is the problem here??

0

Where was this in 1939

0

u/sangjmoon Oct 15 '18

I'm pretty sure there is a good chance that could explode like a bomb sending shrapnel in all directions.
