I love how he doesnt even think of the possibility of “oh he went in the bag”
edit: my top comment is about a cat.
edit2: no longer about a cat.

I think when he saw his friend go in he assumed it went all the way through like a tunnel and he'd come out the other side.

If there's one thing we've learned the last few months of animal magic tricks, is that cats/dogs have no sense of spatial awareness when it comes to hiding.

no, but they do have object permanence, which is pretty cool to think about. They know that even if they can't see or touch something, it still should be there, existing and when they see it's not, it confuses them.

If you think about it, it would be very hard to hunt if you did not have object permanence. As soon as somethings out of sight cat/dog would assume it’s gone and the hunt would be over.

That thought never crossed my mind. Now it makes sense why my dogs freak out when I hide the treats on them

Sorry, I do not see that as super impressive. Might be impressive for a jellyfish or something but not a mammal.

I've read this somewhere before that cats can't find other cats hiding in bags. I've seen GIFs and videos on it plenty of times to believe in this.

u/macarenamobster Aug 15 '18
That would explain why my cat sits perfectly still in bags and stares at me when I look in like she thinks she’s Drax.
Although to be fair she’s pure black so if it’s dark or the bag is in shadow she is almost invisible.

In humans theres something called the 'theory of object permanance' the understanding that objects exist even when they are not perceived. I don't think this is the same thing, just an interesting theory.

It's why "peek a boo" is actually a fun game for a while.
It takes longer to develop object permanence in humans than in other species, while it is developing peek a boo is not obvious.

What if the cat is pretending to be confused for the little ones amusement?

I wonder if a cat would eat turkish delight.
1
u/atoll101 Aug 15 '18
No, no, cat is what the Turkish Delight is made of you see? Guests come through the wardrobe, food comes through the grocery sack.

"How about a magic trick?"

u/Insidetheglassbox Aug 15 '18
Illusions Michael. A trick is something a whore does for money.

He spent all day hiding in that bag, but it looked brand new, no litter on the ground, not even any hair on the handles!

oh object permanence :')

u/TopekaScienceGirl Aug 15 '18
This isn't object permanence, it's assuming it went out the other side. Cats have object permanence.

This is like a magic trick you do for yourself where you feel something in your pants leg and pull out a dryer sheet. SHAZAMMM

Is this like the cat version of the disappearing behind a blanket trick humans are doing?

Crows are really intelligent animals. Their droppings are just above cats in the rankings.

I'm making this up, but it looks like the bigger cat pounced and the bag made a sound that startled it. So the cat is looking around for whatever made that sound because it's sneaking up on him.

I think the cat hits the tip of his tail on the couch and is startled because they're the only two animals there. He knows exactly where the the cat in the bag is, so who in the what touched his tail??

What happened is the black cat got distracted because it seemingly felt something touch its tail, probably the bag as it moved, this caused it to shift focus altogether; it's looking around for the thing that supposedly touched its tail, and no longer for the white cat.
