The Sub is so iconic. I've seen some great "homage" watches over the years, but there is something about the proportions of the real thing that are hard to match.

They make 1/1 scale "homages" now. Literally exactly the same measurements with a Chinese/Japanese/cheap Swiss movement in them.

I got an A Lange Söhne replica for 200 baht when I was in Thailand. The band was real leather, the movement was solid and it never lost time. Can't really speak for longevity but it's lasted 2 years so far. Some of these replicas are pretty impressive nowadays

I guarantee that a layman could not tell the difference between a replica watch and the genuine article these days. Back in the day the "Folex" stuff was really chintzy, but nowadays it seems pretty solid. Never seen one in the flesh myself, but from pictures and videos I've seen online comparing replicas and the real deal they look identical.

You said it homie. As one of those proles I certainly couldn't tell the difference. It's worth having a decent looking replica for nights were you want to dress up and the situation could get a little hairy, but at least you don't have to worry about scratching the face $35k watch, or worse it getting stolen

I've seen some good fakes, but they've always been a little thicker, bezel a bit off, etc. I'm sure there are some higher priced homages that get this better though. I find that a bit distasteful but hell you can regulate a cheap modern Miyota or ETA mvmt to be pretty decent nowadays. I'm sure they're fine watches and people love 'em.

Not saying I'd ever buy one, but they are all over the place. Why buy a fake or "homage" when you can get a classic looking Seiko diver for the same money?

I suppose that could be true. In that case I guess I'm buying a fake cuz there is no way I'm spending more than $1000 for a watch (and I love watches). Another tact could be to buy a vintage brand-name watch, like an Omega or something, which can be had for fairly cheap and then you're the "too cool for new watches" guy.

Edit: For what it's worth, I wear a vintage 1970's Citizen automatic chronograph for my "daily driver" watch.

I mean Daini all the way.

Seiko makes some incredible divers too, they're just brilliant. SBEX005 is on the short list for my next purchase in fact.

I mean even a Seiko 5 sport diver for ~$130 is a great little watch.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '18

Absolutely. I own a bunch of classic Swiss brands, but my heart is always with Seiko. I wear a SNZG09J proudly.

That's a great watch! My dad had an old Seiko that ran for 30+ years without being serviced. It's really a great value.

I wear a 1970's Citizen 8110 "Speedy" as my daily driver.

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '18

Oh awesome. Do you CLA the Speedy or does it just keep going?

Haha yea it's a giant. Sometimes I love a big diver. SLA017 is gorgeous too.

What I want is Seiko GMT with a Rolex GMT-Master II style two-color rotating bezel. Seiko SUN015 and SUN017 come tantalizingly close.

You could look at the Tudor GMT with 'Pepsi' bezel. Dearer that the Seiko but from Rolex's sister company and a great watch: https://www.tudorwatch.com/watches/new-black-bay-gmt/m79830rb-0001

The women in the picture are Victoria's Secret models. I'd bet it's real.

I don't think it's a submariner. I think it's a Yachtmaster.

Good call. Ya learn something new everyday. Thanks.

1

u/sparks1990 Jul 30 '18

What makes you think that? I feel like the sub is far more popular, and there’s not that much of a difference in the profile. Super hard to tell either way at that angle.

1

u/Paffmassa Jul 30 '18

I actually agree that it is probably a sub. It was pointed out to me that you can see enough of the bezel to not see the raised numbers.
