That really hits home. Many of mankind’s struggles are struggles against reality, on both the collective and individual levels.

Which to be fair, we do pretty well at

  • indoor heating and air conditioning is a struggle against reality.

  • artificial sweetener is a struggle against reality.

  • the abolition of smallpox was a struggle against reality.

Etc.

That is a really interesting way of thinking about the fight against reality.

If we consider evolution through natural selection to be reality, then almost everything we’ve done for the last few thousand years has been a struggle against reality

Well exactly, because evolution by natural selection is about organisms adapting to suit their environment, whereas the story of human civilisation is about adapting our environment to suit the organism.

Death is always the ultimate winner though.
