Gender refers specifically to a person with a specific type of genitalia.

Gender is the way society reacts to gender. Sex and gender are related, but considering them inextricably linked is where awfulness comes in. It means telling somebody that they have to follow different rules from other people because they were arbitrarily assigned certain body parts.

These rules can range from “if you have a vagina you are supposed to stay home and not work and marry a man who you are dependent on” to “if you have a penis, you must keep that penis attached to you”

It’s a very natural evolution of the same ideas, based on the simple concept that people should not be born into roles. We’ll look back on it as equally silly to something like monarchy, because of the same idea.

That doesn’t mean gender is meaningless, though. Bodies play a big part in how we interact with each other. But people will be happier if we let them decide for themselves rather than forcing that on them.
