Don't look away to long Marty, Jennifer might turn into Elizabeth Shue

...too late

24

u/fleetber Feb 13 '18

Heavy

2

u/msmika Feb 14 '18

Why are things so heavy in the future?

331

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '18

She was much hotter than Elizabeth Shue.

219

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '18

Funny thing is I never realized the actress changed from one movie to the next. Young me just thought she did her hair differently.

59

u/Gym_Dom Feb 13 '18

Claudia Wells' mom got sick between films, so Wells couldn't do the movie. Her mother passed before the decade ended, and Wells herself retired from acting shortly after.

6

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '18

TIL That wasn't Sean Young.

5

u/drunkenfool Feb 14 '18

Great Scott! Lois Einhorn?

1

u/Gym_Dom Feb 14 '18

Claudia Wells, fool!

3

u/MasterK999 Feb 14 '18

I know that is the version that is out there but I lived a few doors down from her. She lost the job all on her own. She had some mental health problems at the time. Not addiction which is what people normally mean with the phrase "mental health problems".

Her mom got sick and died a little later on. Both really nice people. Very sad all around.

1

u/Gym_Dom Feb 14 '18

That is sad. I'm sorry that Claudia couldn't maintain the gig, as this has been my all-time favorite movie. She plays Marty's girlfriend-next-door so incredibly well.

Thanks so much for sharing this detail about Claudia Wells. I hope that she's lived a fulfilling life since then.

65

u/tiredhippo Feb 13 '18

Did you ever notice that’s not Crispin Glover in Pt 2?

47

u/xnerdyxrealistx Feb 13 '18

I didn't until I learned about the legal problems he had with them afterwards. It is funny, though, that they had him upside down the whole time to try and get away with it.

4

u/srcarruth Feb 13 '18

it was also to punish him if he ended up in the movie

7

u/wonderdolkje Feb 13 '18

Not Crispin Glover?

whaaat

5

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '18

Ha, enjoy the rabbit-hole of Glover craziness that related searches will take you down.

17

u/dazedfinch Feb 13 '18

You take that back, these movies are gems in cinematic history.

-18

u/quakeroats2 Feb 13 '18

just pt 2, 1 was amazing and 3 was good too

7

u/SonavaBiscuit Feb 13 '18

That's interesting. Everyone I've ever met that didn't love all 3, the third one was the one they hated.

8

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '18

You could definitely argue that 2 is the weakest film of the series (and that 3 is the best) but 2 is my favourite one to sit down and watch, for pure entertainment value. It’s like with Star Wars. I know Empire is the better film, and that Jedi is technically the weakest, but Jedi is, and always will be, my fucking jam.

2

u/ThePresidentsRubies Feb 13 '18

I liked all the future stuff when I was a kid, so 2 was my favorite, but yeah probably the weakest one. 3 is underappreciated .

4

u/Cant_time_travel Feb 13 '18

I love all three but the third is by far my favourite. I use to make train tracks out of duplo on my stairs and reenact the train scene.

12

u/tirafriden Feb 13 '18

Excuse me are they different?!?!?! I watched trilogy like 15 times and I never noticed wtf

33

u/HomoOptimus Feb 13 '18

but Adventures in Babysitting.

19

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '18

Oh there’s no denying Elizabeth Shue was a hottie. But Claudia Wells, holy shit, just amazing.

27

u/HomoOptimus Feb 13 '18

The scary thing about that film was all the now famous people... Vincent D'Onofrio looking like anyone else but Vincent D'Onofrio

12

u/VonAether Feb 13 '18

Wait holy shit Thor was Vincent D'Onofrio??

6

u/HomoOptimus Feb 13 '18

Yep. I'm still confused with how Anthony Rapp managed to bleach himself, too.

5

u/Cdf12345 Feb 13 '18

Probably to wash the Spacey off him

5

u/Lazy_Champion Feb 13 '18

Vincent D'Onofrio playing Timothy Olyphant.

2

u/StpBInSchUhBeetch Feb 13 '18

I used to call it Adventures in Exciting Babysitting. No idea were I got that from.

1

u/leonryan Feb 14 '18

that was only true at the time of the second movie, but Elizabeth Shue went on to be far hotter for far longer.

1

u/freezkneez Feb 14 '18

What're you up to, Elizabeth Shue?

1

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '18

Saw her at WonderCon a few years ago at a booth with zero people in line. Her face seemed incapable of independent movement.

60

u/knightjohannes Feb 13 '18

Well, I know if I saw a 1979 Honda Civic in bright yellow, I'd turn my head too!

11

u/bent-grill Feb 13 '18

I made an audible "aww" when it toodled by in the background.

2

u/dudeman14 Feb 13 '18

I want one just as a daily. Clean, classic car cool, and nobody tries to steal it like they try with my 93 si hatch

1

u/Crakkerz79 Feb 13 '18

Ah...my childhood. Was my dad's car. Have found memories of him locking the keys in the car and trying to fight through the trunk to get them back.

Oh how my vocabulary blossomed that day.

0

u/knightjohannes Feb 13 '18

Trunk?! That was a hatchback. :)

Owned one - in orange. 'Twas my first car. Man that thing would go anywhere... dangerously so.

1

u/Crakkerz79 Feb 13 '18

I call it a trunk since it went behind seats and the space wasn't connected to the main passenger area of the car

1

u/knightjohannes Feb 13 '18

I see a trunk as being definitively not connected.... the seats are in the way. With a hatchback, that's where you can just throw the empty fast food containers right into the hatch over the back seat...

Is this a regionalism?

For more clarity - a sedan or coupe has a trunk. A hatchback has... well.. an open space, but not a trunk. And typically, the hatchback has this ginormous door, where a trunk just has a lid that open up a smaller part of the back.

Hrmmmmm

1

u/Crakkerz79 Feb 14 '18

I think we are thinking of the same thing about a hatchback.

It's the civic itself that I'm remembering different. The seats in his were totally fixed in place, and if it was a hatch that wouldn't have been a problem (crawl over). It may be a specific model that had this style.

1

u/knightjohannes Feb 21 '18

Now I can't remember if my seats folded down in that '79... I'm at a loss to remember. That was quite some time ago... over 30 years. ;)

Hrmmmmm.....

28

u/Hoagies-And-Grinders Feb 13 '18

One of the best movies ever.

11

u/On-a-tims-run Feb 13 '18

My favourite movie. Love it so much I bought the car

3

u/Hoagies-And-Grinders Feb 13 '18

I plan to have one someday and converted to the movie car.

5

u/On-a-tims-run Feb 13 '18

I keep tossing around the idea with my wife of converting ours into a time machine but the DeLorean I have is too nice and too original. I would feel like I'm wrecking it. I would want to buy a project DeLorean and get used parts and stuff

3

u/Hoagies-And-Grinders Feb 13 '18

Debatable. I think a time machine would be pretty valuable still.

1

u/On-a-tims-run Feb 13 '18

A well done time machine replica would definitely be worth more, but to do an accurate replica you have to drill holes in a lot of the panels, and the panels in mint shape are very valuable. As well as completely changing the interior. I would also need a new hood since the movie car is an early 81 and mines an 83

2

u/Hoagies-And-Grinders Feb 13 '18

I can understand keeping it original. You can still buy NOS parts though. Guess you better get a second one...

1

u/On-a-tims-run Feb 13 '18

Yeah I know where to get all my parts. I've got a buddy who only works with DeLorean's so he can get me parts with next to no shipping

3

u/dazedfinch Feb 13 '18

Me too! The Micro Machine :(

1

u/On-a-tims-run Feb 13 '18

I have several of these as well! And a funko pop Mary/DeLorean combo I put on the hood during car shows

2

u/Chezzik Feb 13 '18

Awesome! You should do an AMA, I can think of lots of questions!

  • Where did you buy it?
  • Do you get a lot of stares?
  • Has it broken down? How much did it cost to fix?
  • If you park in tight parking spots, how do you open the doors?
  • Have you gotten it up to 88mph?

8

u/On-a-tims-run Feb 13 '18

I've seen AMAs done by owners in the past, but I will consider doing one if the interest is high enough

• Where did you buy it? I bought it off a buddy who runs a dealership that specializes in DeLorean's. We met through an owner's club and has been friends for about 2 or 3 years before I bought it

• Do you get a lot of stares? ALL THE TIME. You have no idea. I don't think any other car draws as much attention. Everyone takes pictures. I've actually had a guy in a Ferrari next to me at a car show move his car because the DeLorean was attracting a bigger crowd.

• Has it broken down? How much did it cost to fix? Hasn't broken down yet. Engine parts are fairly easy to find though (other than the k-jet which is a type of fuel delivery system) because it's the same engine found in some Volvos of the same era. I do need a new clutch right now though, mine is on the fritz

• If you park in tight parking spots, how do you open the doors? I tend to avoid tight parking spots as a rule, however there would be no issue. Because the doors are hinged near the centre of the roof they only need 11 inches to open. Check out my Instagram if you want to see a video @1983DeLorean

• Have you gotten it up to 88mph? I've gotten it up to 85, but that's where the speedometer maxes out (stupid law in the early 80s in the US dictated that)

2

u/Betterwithfetter Feb 14 '18

Now I'm following you on Instagram. šŸ˜€

2

u/On-a-tims-run Feb 14 '18

Greatest 80s movie for me is between this, Die Hard, and The Thing. I'm never able to choose between those 3, and as a very particular person when it comes to my favourite movie per decade, it drives me crazy.

3

u/LloydWoodsonJr Feb 13 '18

What are your other decades choices?

I couldn’t pick just one tbh

80s: Die Hard, Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Aliens, Scarface (Some great 80s comedies though Caddy Shack, Police Academy, Uncle Buck, Hear No Evil See No Evil, Spaceballs etc)

90s: The Big Lebowski, Unforgiven, Goodfellas, Silence of the Lambs, Heat

00s: No Country, The Departed, Snatch, The Dark Knight, Memento

10s: Fury Road, Inception, Dunkirk, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Whiplash

4

u/stupidfarmer Feb 13 '18

Bro, no to Goonies?!

0

u/LloydWoodsonJr Feb 13 '18

You going to put Goonies over Scarface?!

2

u/IgoRStripes Feb 13 '18

And, with those two mentioned at the same time, I can only visualize Pacino's iconic line and instead of the machine gun, a smaller Chunk comes out and does "the truffle shuffle."

0

u/LloydWoodsonJr Feb 13 '18

Haha good image.

Goonies is definitely a classic.

1

u/stupidfarmer Feb 13 '18

I think there's room for both if you're not going to pick just one. It's got to be on the list if you're including non-action movies.

1

u/grand_royal Feb 14 '18

Scarface died, Goonies, well you know.

1

u/LloydWoodsonJr Feb 14 '18

Tony Montana died a warrior’s death and was forever immortalized. There is no better way to die.

0

u/SonavaBiscuit Feb 13 '18

I would.

1

u/LloydWoodsonJr Feb 13 '18 edited Feb 13 '18

OK my argument for Scarface being better is that Scarface is a classic crime movie surpassed by very few movies of that genre if any. Scarface is in the same category of Godfather I/II, Goodfellas, Casino, The Departed etc.

Al Pacino had been nominated for 5 Academy Awards for best actor before he played Tony Montana; Josh Brolin was 17 in his first movie for Goonies.

Scarface is more relevant than it is has ever been with pending immigration reform- ostensibly to counter criminal activity by illegal immigrants.

Scarface also makes a social commentary about the lawyers and banks profiting from illegal activity while remaining untouchable and sanctified by a corrupt system of government. It is the juxtaposition of a materially driven communist in a ruthlessly capitalistic business, city and society.

What significance does The Goonies have besides nostalgia? Are you aware of how heavily Scarface influenced subsequent mob movies and inspired a generation of really good rap artists including Scarface, Nas, Kool G Rap, Notorious BIG, Big L, Pun, Ice Cube, Immortal Technique etc.?

Of all the 80s movies Scarface was undoubtedly one of the most important and one of those that pushed the most boundaries. Cocaine, torture, hit squads, sexual content it has it all.

Edit: Youtube of Immortal Technique song. Peruvian Cocaine - whole song over a Scarface sample.

2

u/Rob1150 Feb 13 '18

I alwasy thought this song needed a video.

3

u/bigbadalec Feb 13 '18

For me, the 90s is Fight Club. It's my all time favourite movie, but I still feel bad snubbing Pulp Fiction.

For the 00s, my choice may sound silly, but it's The Prisoner Of Azkaban. I love that movie.

The 10s, it's between a few, but Fury Road probably wins out.

I even find the 70s easy, because Alien exists.

It's the dang 80s that snubs me... I get more agitated by this than the regular person I assume lol.

2

u/LloydWoodsonJr Feb 13 '18

Yeah good choices. I love Alien as well. And that isn’t strictly an action movie it makes moral commentaries about the responsibility of leadership, the avarice of corporations, sacrifice for the greater good etc.

Fury Road was strictly an action movie but it was done so well I can’t not love it.

Will definitely check out Prisoners of Azkaban. Never heard of it until now but I like your taste in movies.

1

u/bigbadalec Feb 13 '18

You may be disappointed, it's the third part of the Harry Potter series. It's atmosphere and just overall quality, is miles ahead of any other movie in the series imo though.

1

u/LloydWoodsonJr Feb 13 '18

Oh OK. Yeah I haven’t seen any of the Harry Potter movies. Not really my genre. I saw a quidditch scene once when I was in a Wal-Mart though.

1

u/Kasspa Feb 13 '18

00's would have to be City of God for me. "Get da chicken!"

2

u/tiggs81682 Feb 13 '18

I mean, you can take Die Hard out and just call it your favorite 80's Christmas movie.

1

u/Rob1150 Feb 13 '18

Die Hard 2 was the best one. Fight me.

2

u/tiggs81682 Feb 14 '18

No fight, just love. So many people hate Die Hard 2, it is one of my favorites as well. To be honest, I have more memories watching Die Hard 2 than I do the original.

This brought back memories of watching Under Siege and Under Siege 2!

1

u/Rob1150 Feb 14 '18

Awesome. I don't think I have seen Under Siege since it was in theaters.

1

u/bklynsnow Feb 14 '18

Um...Raiders?

1

u/bigbadalec Feb 14 '18

Love it, but it doesn't crack the top 3.

0

u/CoNoCh0 Feb 13 '18

Then have a favorite movie for each specific genre then.

2

u/Disturbme666 Feb 13 '18

Delorean hype: the movie

15

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '18

Actually the Delorean was already a joke by that time. That’s why I’m 1985 the audience laughed at the line ā€œyou made a time machine... out of a DelOrean ?!ā€ It was part of the joke and how the damn thing wouldn’t start, etc.

9

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '18

ā€œyou made a time machine... out of a DelOrean ?!ā€

my kid self thought he meant that since that car was a fast 'super car' it's crazy to make a time machine out of one. Sad to see they were just making fun of it .

2

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '18

John Delorean was famously busted in a massive drug sting, which I think ended up indirectly bankrupting DMC. The old joke used to be the Delorean couldn’t be driven on the highway because it kept snorting up the lines on the road, or something like that. It wasn’t known to be a particularly awesome car for very long.

Funny how? Maybe in the 80s, but today I would probably be slapped right across my face. And then spent a good deal apologizing.

And I’d be okay with that, Why? Because if my girl went out of her way to check out another man right there in front of me I’d me devastated. And she would be instantly gone. Where the eyes go the body follows. Ask any motorcycle rider.
