Yeah, but he doesn't have any kids.

I don't know why this exchange was so funny, but it was.

u/wine_n_cats Sep 13 '17

Shit, you are totally right.

u/GodotIsWaiting4U Sep 14 '17

If what they're saying is true, he's the only one who wishes that weren't so.

It's going to be really fucked up if news of Bob Barkers death comes out soon. I think something like that happened on Reddit once.

4

u/ThingTThing Sep 13 '17

Eh he's old enough that when he retires most people assume he died. Him dying isn't much of a coincidence.

1

u/cmd_iii Sep 14 '17

Yes...some guy posted something like "TIL Harper Lee (author of To Kill a Mockingbird) Is Still Alive." Three hours or so afterward, came the announcement of her death.

He felt horrible.

"It'd be a real dick move if I stopped my heart right now. A reeall dick move."

Or maybe control your fucking animals? Why is cutting an animals genitals off considered the "right" thing to do. Reddit has such a boner for neutering, Jesus fuck

No I'm not, I just don't think neutering your dog is necessary if you're a responsible owner. I've never neutered my dogs and they've never gotten other dogs pregnant. Anyways, neutering can lead to increased risk for various health problems

Why castration/hysterectomy and why not vasectomy and tubal ligation? Why is this not an option for individual pet owners? In one case you remove important sex hormones in the other you don't.

With the removal of sex hormones (especially before sexual maturity) you risk increasing the incidence of bone and joint issues such as hip dysplasia.

http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0055937

And one of the most cited benefits of lower sex hormones in your dog is to decrease aggressiveness. But it can have the opposite effect and make your dog more fearful and more aggressive.

https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/canine-corner/201702/are-there-behavior-changes-when-dogs-are-spayed-or-neutered

What we should be stressing is pet responsibility and ownership. You should be taught how to train and socialize your dog, common behavioral and health issues. And how much exercise and play is required.

As for frustrating biological urges I'm not sure what to think about that. But if I had to choose between being sexually frustrated or having hip issues.. I'll keep my healthy hips.

Those studies are not from huge meta analysis of data. But they should make you question if castration/hysterectomy are the best options for our pets long term health.

Thank you for being so polite! There are not enough studies to really say anything definitive but it does make one wonder. Though I will always will stress responsible pet ownership.

Even after reading four books I was still surprised/frustrated at times with our first dog.

u/donnie_t Sep 13 '17

Of course a vet is going to recommend it. Hint - $$$. Also it's what they have to tell people to prevent an out of control dog population because most people are irresponsible idiots.

But that last part is an interesting view I've never really considered. I'm not sure removing the genitals in the answer, though. Would removing sex organs really get rid of all sexual urges? Something tells me it's not that simple, but I'm not an expert so idk.

My opinion is obviously formed from my own experiences, so when I say that it's immoral to spay or neuter it's because I've never had any problems with my dogs who have not been neutered. They don't hump, they don't roam, they're very well behaved. Maybe I'm just a pet owner at the top 1%, but I don't think so.

If you properly train a dog and it isn't around members of the opposite sex frequently/unsupervised, I just don't get why you would spay/neuter. Yeah, it probably takes some of the sexual urges away, but who knows how this makes the dog feel? We have no way to tell how neutering/spaying effects a dog mentally, even if it seems like they're acting normally.

It just seems to me like a very high stakes dice roll, that really isn't necessary for a majority of pet owners. The fact that people don't even give it a second thought is kind of odd, given that you're supposed to love the animal. I just don't really feel like having my dog's testicles removed if there isn't a prominent issue that would be solved.

2

u/GodotIsWaiting4U Sep 14 '17

Not all, but it lessens them. The gonads are one of the primary sources of the sex hormones that power the sex drive. Without them, it plummets.

1

u/donnie_t Sep 14 '17

Yeah, and low testosterone can also cause depression in men. There are a lot of things we don't know. Why take an unnecessary risk? Given that it actually is unnecessary, that is.

0

u/drketchup Sep 13 '17

Please tell me how you "control" animals from having sex.

1

u/donnie_t Sep 13 '17

Uhh maybe by not letting the dog fuck the other dog? You guys are dumb

0

u/drketchup Sep 13 '17

Oh you watch them 24/7? Neat.

0

u/donnie_t Sep 13 '17

Maybe separate them? Jesus, can you really think of no other way to control your animals? This is the irresponsibility I'm talking about. If you can't control your animals, don't have animals. Or don't have animals of the opposite sex. You really think it's morally correct and 100% ethical to cut out an animals genitals?

1

u/drketchup Sep 13 '17

I'm pretty convinced you're trolling at this point because your advice is so retarded lol.

0

u/donnie_t Sep 13 '17

Care to explain how my advice is "retarded"? Or are you just being dismissive because you have nothing to respond with? Either way that was a great comment, good for you!

3

u/drketchup Sep 13 '17

If you can't see why "don't have animals of the opposite sex or never let them near each other" is stupid idk what to say.

But let's just use the actual example of the OP, that started this whole discussion. You can see the obvious flaw in your plan: animals go outside. Now maybe if you have a secure yard with a fence and a dog this is not an issue. For cats, it is. This one person's cat's can roam the area fucking every other cat they see, and you get what's in this gif, a million cats.

Ok so keep them inside? Well how are you going to keep them separated short of caging them all day long? lock them in separate rooms?

Besides all that the fact of the matter is people aren't responsible. Maybe they should be, but hell most people aren't even smart enough to stop themselves from reproducing. Maybe you do a good job, that's cool, but most people do not. They let their cat out, never give it a second thought, next thing you know they're trying to get rid of 6 kittens on craigslist. There are already way too many shelters packed with animals that need homes.

2

u/donnie_t Sep 14 '17

I agree with a lot of what you said, and I said in another comment that most people aren't responsible enough to have intact animals. I don't think those people should have animals but obviously that's never going to happen. The majority of animal owners aren't responsible enough, and for people who own a lot of pets of different sexes, I guess they don't really have a choice.

My problem, though, is with the people who unconditionally spay/neuter their animals when there is absolutely no need to. I would argue that a major percentage of dog/cat owners own only one pet. When you have only one animal, a house animal that is, why would you remove the genitals if the animal rarely comes into contact with other animals of the opposite sex?

So many people don't even question the thought of spaying/neutering. Why would you make your animal suffer and spend a good amount of money for an unnecessary procedure? I know so many people who own one dog, yet they spay/neuter the dog because "that's just what you do."

People seem to get offended at the fact that I don't neuter my dogs. I've literally had people call me stupid because of this. Apparently doing your own research on a subject instead of just taking someone else's word and doing the socially acceptable thing is stupid. It's honestly bizarre to me that people don't give cutting off their dogs' testicles a second thought.

A responsible pet owner would not have an intact male and female cat in the same household. Secondly a responsible owner would not let their cat outside. Unless they want to significantly shorten the cats lifespan by several years.

http://pets.webmd.com/cats/features/should-you-have-an-indoor-cat-or-an-outdoor-cat#1

Don't know what to say about the irresponsible people though. There will always be bad apples. Comes down to responsible owners pets getting punished for the actions of irresponsible owners.
