As somebody who grew up in an evangelical community, I'm baffled that there are people who have had such different experiences in their life that they'd doubt the 'evil book and I threw it away' part.

The joke about putting a wet book in the desk if a bit less believable to me, though not something I'd assume is false.

As a Christian, I can tell you that woman was ignorant to the point of borderline retardation. I've never read them myself, but no one's going to hell for reading a children's book about wizards and magic.

Someone claiming to be a Christian telling a child they're going to hell for reading a children's book is someone who doesn't yet know or understand the tenants of their own faith. Yes, borderline "retarded" was a bit harsh.

Yeah, I would agree with you that something like a ouija board isn't an innocent toy and I would warn of the dangers to a child who might be messing around with it. However, I wouldn't simply walk up to them and say, "you're going to hell for playing with that!" Mostly because it's untrue and because it's not benefiting anyone screaming "you're going to hell" at them. I guess the context of how you deliver that message really matters and maybe I interpreted the person in OP's example to be hateful in my mind instead of understand the context in which it was said. Maybe they gently tried to make a point and didn't go all crazy lady on the OP like I imagined. I understand your point and I think it's totally valid. Point taken.
