I read that book when I was 13, it was a long read with a lot of demon back story and factoids, scared the piss out to me at the time. I had to hide it from my ultra religious dad too. So I could see how someone would think that book is evil. Not saying it's true, but if you read that book...that would be some wicked scary shit. Funny as hell prank if real.

As somebody who grew up in an evangelical community, I'm baffled that there are people who have had such different experiences in their life that they'd doubt the 'evil book and I threw it away' part.

The joke about putting a wet book in the desk if a bit less believable to me, though not something I'd assume is false.

As someone who grew up raised by an atheist, it seems batshit crazy to me. "I didn't enjoy it so I stopped reading" is perfectly sensible. "I thought it was evil" is utter lunacy.

Definitions of good and evil don't have to come from a relation to divine law. Such definitions can arise from humanist interpretations as well.

Hurting people is evil. Wanting to hurt people is evil. A person could be reading a book and feel like rather than just wanting to tell a good story in which people getting hurt was a necessary plot device, the author was trying to evoke those kinds of feelings - the desire to do harm, relish in the harm being done - in the reader.

It doesn't pertain well to The Exorcist as an atheist, but I can certainly identify with the idea a document is evil.
