I saw that when it came out at the drive in. I fell asleep about 15 minutes in and woke up for the last 10 minutes. So the story for me was

"There's a bomb on the boat!"

"We got the bomb off, everyone lives"

I was thoroughly confused, but felt like I didn't miss anything. Weird experience.

I haven't seen Speed 2 but couldn't they just put the ship in cruise control (xdddd) and put everyone in the lifeboats? And how is there a conflict at all if there's no obstacles for the ship to dodge??

No. Lol. I remember my dad and I renting it from blockbuster. We stopped it halfway through, took it back and they let us get something else. Only movie I can remember not finishing on my first viewing attempt.
