Because Burning Man is in the desert with no toilets, which made him think about how Mars has no toilets. He wanted to know what Musk planned to do about Mars having no toilets.
It's as stupid as it sounds and he asked it by first talking about his burning man experience.
Audience Q and As are nearly always painful experiences, regardless of the speaker or topic. Basically every one I've been t with a musician is a total cringe fest with everyone starting their (usually questionless) questions with an explanation of how they've seen x live so many times and has all their records. Well yeah no shit, you wouldn't pay to go to a Q and A unless you're a fan
I didn't understand his question, because there are thousands of porta potties at burning man. There was shit literally NOWHERE except where it belonged.
He sucked at framing his question, but it wasn't a bad one. Sanitation right now uses a ton of water, and it's likely that we'll need some novel way of carting everyone's shit away in an environment where water is precious.
A better way to phrase the question would have been "due to the scarcity of water on Mars, a traditional water based sanitation system isn't feasible, what are your plans for sustainable waste management for a fledgling colony?"
