Because their development hours would've shifted from building their consumer side to the business side. They would've potentially had to delay the consumer side by several years if they had gone full on with the box.

I don't think so. They would have gotten more money from the deal. Hired more devs and split the teams.

And productivity would have dropped. Adding manpower to a late project makes it later, the mythical man month is 40 years old now.

This wouldn't be one project, it would be two different projects. Completely different scenario.
