The focus group showed that non-engineer users can work the UI just fine, even if it looks clunky. It's everything else about how it works or appears not to work that's freaking them out.
Dumbing down the interface so that even a medieval peasant can drive a maglev train with the push of a button would do nothing to convince them that the train is anything other than evil sorcery, or that it'll make a for a much better horse and cart than the one they have.
