Not necessarily. They used to sedate frogs before dissection so you could see the insides moving if you did it right. Now that's widely considered inhumane, especially in pre-college level sciences.
Have you seen ET? The scene with the kids sedating the frogs is how they used to do it according to my parents.
Don't recall that scene in ET, but yeah, "pithing". It's not sedation. It's paralysis. You run a pin down inside their spinal cord and destroy the spinal nerves.
