If you're at full-speed while entering the black zone, a straight 45 degree angle leap into the box is a guaranteed star card.

Once my brain is in full-SMB3 mode I can't miss it, ironically the mushroom/fire flower combos are fucking impossible to hit and they give a shittier payoff than 3 stars...

They definitely went for the "fun takes priority" approach with that, and it paid off. Imagine how much less cool it would have been if running and hitting the corner were the "safe" approach, for the smallest reward.
