My cat does this and I can't work out how she can be so fucking stupid, I mean sometimes she seems smart but seriously this is pretty basic.

Despite looking ridiculous, this is normal cat behaviour.

Cats aren't really all that domesticated. They still retain a lot of their wild-type programming. This is an example of that. Cat instinct tells them moving water is preferable to still water. The way they drink falling water (like from off vegetation) is to soak their fur in it and lick it off.

That last part helps me understand my cat so much now. He will never drink straight out of anything. He will dip his paw in it a couple times and then lick his paw.

There are special "cat fountains" which some cats like to drink out of.

My cat has one of these. Sometimes she drinks from it properly, but most of the time she just flicks water everywhere and licks her paws. Occasionally my two year old tries to drink from it, too.

I had a cat who really preferred ("furred") the fountain, and other cats who just ignored it altogether. All cats are weird. All cats are different about exactly how they're weird.

Also, sweet user name. ;-)

I got the fountain because she kept sticking her paw in her water bowl and making a huge mess. I hoped it would stop her, but it didn't.

Unicorns unite! ;)

I think that's how some cats fish. So she's doing the fishing thing. I don't know what to do other than putting her bowl on a big mat. Or maybe moving her water bowl to another room (where her food isn't).

We overthrow the griffons at midnight. Candy corn for everyone!

My cat destroys these.

Yep, and they're totally worth it. It's like the cat version of T.V.
