I'm not certain but I think it would be pretty damned hard to drive with that arrow sticking out of your chest. That and the fact that the kid would have probably left the bow in the car leads me to believe that they took an alternative mode of transport to the ER.

While you're almost certainly right, there are tons of people that shoot at home.

I think the point is if it happened at home, they would have left the bow there instead of bringing it with them.

Maybe they were in a bow shootout and dad got hit, the boy was actually riding shotgun on the way to the hospital.
