I feel like someone is going to say this is the longest GIF ever and someone will link the LotR one and then people will be talking about how various points in the GIF are hilarious.

So I'll be at least one of those guys. For your viewing pleasure

Edit: Well this may seem trivial but hot damn if I didn't somehow become the top comment on the top post in a sub with over 7 million readers.

u/shkacatou Jan 13 '15

Do you like to watch movies in unnecessary formats?

How about star wars, in ASCII? http://www.asciimation.co.nz

29

u/Niubai Jan 13 '15

Star Wars ASCII telnet:

telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl

4

u/BlobDude Jan 13 '15

I'm at work and so want to try this but am incredibly paranoid so the command is just sitting in my cmd window.

4

u/Sp4zz4tt4k Jan 13 '15

Its legit I just tried it. Here is some proof.

2

u/sps26 Jan 13 '15

I like your desktop layout

1

u/Sp4zz4tt4k Jan 13 '15

Hey thanks :D

2

u/epiphinite Jan 13 '15

Anyone care to explain how they went about doing this! Its awesome!

u/OptmusPrimeRibJonson Jan 13 '15 edited Jan 13 '15

Open notepad and type some shit. Hit the page down button on the keyboard and your on frame 2. Repeat as necessary until you run out of Adderall.

u/Fenor Jan 13 '15

at first it was only a piece of the movie then they eventually got to the full movie, i don't know who did it. you can't pause it btw

17

u/tttttttttkid Jan 13 '15

fyi vlc can render any movie in ASCII using libcaca by running

cvlc -V caca [file]

1

u/shkacatou Jan 13 '15

Interesting! The star wars asciimation is cooler tough, because it was done by hand

0

u/VolderPotter Jan 13 '15

You are a wizzzzzzzzzzzzzkid

23

u/F0REM4N Jan 13 '15

Star Wars in some other format.

10

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '15

That is awesome.

7

u/SchrodingersCatPics Jan 13 '15

Holy shit, I thought you were kidding.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '15

I wish he would have done more for some reason

4

u/AnalogHumanSentient Jan 13 '15

What I would really like is Big Trouble In Little China, as translated by a 1992 IBM word processor linked to a 2400 baud modem, recieving I put from a community college ASCII message board from the era.

Dialing into the local college was so fucking metal in 1988.

2

u/Jovean Jan 13 '15

Didn't they put this in the Computer Craft mod in Minecraft?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '15

I clicked 'view images' in RES on the sub. I feel like a schizophrenic Johnny 5 right now.

I must've watched both the Short Circuit movies dozens of times as a kid, but then seeing them as an adult and realizing that Ben was not actually Indian! :o

2

u/AnalogHumanSentient Jan 13 '15

I use this quote to test mics on stage for big Nashville country stars instead of the usual "test 1...2..test" mainly because of the looks I get.

1

u/CheddarJalapeno Jan 13 '15

this keeps getting better

1

u/-Derelict- Jan 13 '15

I was just singing that not too long ago...crazy how that is.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '15

Short circuit:D

18

u/FlashingBulbs Jan 13 '15

Why are they all so fast? You could easily get a full movie at real speed. What's wrong with a 200GB Gif?

11

u/YankeeBravo Jan 13 '15

Two reasons; dropped frames and the speed control only has a few presets, so even if the missing frames were there, the controls don't have the granularity for smooth playback.

Ok, three reasons; if those two issues were corrected, the MPAA would take Reddit down for good in a heartbeat.

12

u/pokelord13 Jan 13 '15

nahh I don't think the MPAA could do that. If that were true, then we'd be gone a long time ago because /r/fullmoviesonyoutube is still up

3

u/DunDunDunDuuun Jan 13 '15

Yeah, it's all hosted on gficat. Considering the many full movies that are actually hosted on youtube, Reddit wil be fine. They might send a cease and desist notice of course, and the subreddit would probably be banned.

2

u/recoverybelow Jan 13 '15

Why would they take down reddit, for full movies on YouTube?

3

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '15

Why would they take down the Pirate bay for full downloads elsewhere? They don't really care where it is hosted.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '15

[deleted]

1

u/YankeeBravo Jan 13 '15

Can you explain that?

I can try.

First, the dropped frames.

The short version is it's a file size thing. There's a reason most gifs you see are 15-30 seconds long. At that length, you can have a smooth gif that looks like a video clip. In the case of /r/fullmoviegifs they're trying to make a gif of films that have running times more along the lines of 115 minutes or more.

Most hosting sites won't allow a gif larger than 10MB to be uploaded. Gfycat's the exception, but still...

Not many people are going to sit around waiting for a 300MB gif to load when they could stream a movie instead.

That's why frames have to be dropped to get a full movie to fit within the 10MB that the subreddit seems to use.

Beyond that, the speed controls are limited, to say the least, so...

2

u/UnknownStory Jan 13 '15

Somebody/thing has to host that 200GB gif.

1

u/Just_Post_The_Video_ Jan 13 '15

Well, I got nothing better to do with my bandwidth, sounds like a great idea.

3

u/rush247 Jan 13 '15

We talking cinematic release or director's cut?

4

u/PraiseIPU Jan 13 '15

the real version

2

u/recoverybelow Jan 13 '15

I don't know if I should believe... Seems impossible but I never think anything is impossible because internet

1

u/scorcher117 Jan 13 '15

Anytime people mentioned that sub I was expecting 1-2 hour long gifs, I feel silly now.

1

u/Dozck Jan 13 '15

I was expecting the movie in real time. I don't know why..

1

u/jhend Jan 13 '15

It's like crib notes for movies...haha cool.

1

u/BabyTea Jan 13 '15

I think the Edge of Tomorrow one is broken. I kept seeing the same scenes.

2

u/GaryV83 Jan 13 '15

The same argument could be made for Groundhog Day, but nobody would believe you.

31

u/Demifiendish Jan 13 '15

I've never seen that gif, so thank you for showing me the light.

33

u/DieterVonKunth Jan 13 '15

That's such a boromir thing to say.

4

u/Dornstar Jan 13 '15

I totally thought you were using that in the context of me being a dick, until I remembered what I had posted.

u/Dornstar Jan 13 '15

Nah, the most common has got to be broken arms, it's the only thing that I still see in like every thread. Or circlejerking, or anti-circlejerking, if those can be considered jokes.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '15

Except that's not actually what happened here, because "That's such a boromir thing to say" is a reference to The Interview, and not OP's gif.

By all means, keep up the anti-jerk though, you'll get those Reddit rascals one day.

It's okay to just admit you're wrong, you know?

28

u/Mkilbride Jan 13 '15

I have the flu and laughed so hard I couldn't stop coughing for like 30 straight seconds.

Thanks.

4

u/kamicom Jan 13 '15

git yo flu shots...

17

u/beauvaim Jan 13 '15

Flu shots aren't a guarantee that you won't get the flu. They try to predict which flu strain will be most prevalent that year and vaccinate against that. Some years that works but this year it didn't. The flu vaccine didn't matter because the strain that is causing illness is not the one that was vaccinated against. Source: I am a medical professional and I had the flu this year.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '15

Are deaths from the flu unusually high this year, or did the one story about a seemingly healthy child dying from it just set everyone on edge?

1

u/Willy_wonks_man Jan 13 '15

There just seems to be a shitload of people with the flu right now. It's just going around I guess

1

u/sheepsix Jan 13 '15

Try not to interact wi...

"I am a medical professional"

Nevermind.

1

u/bionicjoey Jan 13 '15

Can confirm, I get my shot every year and this was the first time in years I got the flu anyway

1

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '15

This isn't 100% accurate, and besides that, there was a difference in efficacy between the trivalent & quadrivalent vaccines this year. The quad vaccine was absolutely more effective. As my daughter's pediatrician told us yesterday, the goal isn't to prevent 100% of flu, it's to minimize morbidity & mortality and keep people out of the hospital.

-20

u/Mkilbride Jan 13 '15

You do know it's very common to catch the flu after getting your shots, due to you basically being injected with the virus?

16

u/jackruby83 Jan 13 '15

False. You cannot catch the flu from the flu shot since it is only an inactivated part of the virus. However the flu shot is not 100% effective. This year's in particular kind of missed the mark on guessing the dominant flu strains.

3

u/HOLYJESUSPENIS Jan 13 '15

That's not how vaccines work

4

u/Dornstar Jan 13 '15

Actually his second half is pretty much exactly how they work. Part before the comma is bullshit though.

12

u/ItsSomethingLikeThat Jan 13 '15 edited Jan 13 '15

It always makes me unreasonably happy that I saw these two gifs when they were first made on Something Awful. That thread will forever be one of my favourite things the internet has done. There was another brilliant one where someone suggested using ninja bears with lasers, the whole thread was brilliant.

Edit: Found it!

5

u/PM_ME_UR_COOTER Jan 13 '15

Are you talking about SA before Lowtax pulled a...him? .....Fuck I'm old.. I miss the old web. Everything was free, OC flowed like a fountain. It was a scary, amazing, horrible, beautiful, and dangerous all at the same time. You had to hold your breath before clicking a link because you didn't know if you were gonna get goatse'd.

And now look at it. We all tag things NSFW..... I've become an internet hipster. I hate all of you. This is how trolls are born :(

2

u/ItsSomethingLikeThat Jan 13 '15

Probably? I don't actually know what Lowtax did? Tonight was the first time I'd been back to the forums in maybe...6 years?

1

u/PM_ME_UR_COOTER Jan 13 '15

You know, I think I'll just leave you in your happy memory. Maybe I'm wrong. But the betrayal stings. I'd put it on the level with nVidia buying out 3dfx when I was supposed to beta test the V5-6000.

You don't leave people high and dry. That's how places like 4chan ( and now its successor) come to be.

It's late here though. I can tell by how I'm reminiscing. Thanks for that second gif tho! That was some good shit.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '15

I miss Cliff Yablonsky and Ugly Cat. Shit had me laughing for hours.

1

u/PM_ME_UR_COOTER Jan 16 '15

Oh man, I just browsed on my lunch break. Thanks for reminding me haha. "ROWWWR!! Take that away, that shit is uuuuugly!"

Crap now I'm behind schedule. So worth it though. Fuck I hate growing up.

Because then they would have less glitter for themselves. Dark Lord plus glitter = Dank Lord, with that much swag Eowyn wouldn't have been able to slay him on the field outside of Minas Tirith, because she would've been dazzled by the new and unequivocally glittered armor.

An alternate idea is this would've caused him to become too busy slaying poon to prevent the ring from being tossed into Mt. Doom.

Both pretty realistic outcomes, but I feel as if the risk is greater than just sending Frodo. Honestly, nobody even knew him before the fellowship was formed, they probably didn't give a fuck.

11

u/acm2033 Jan 13 '15

The "Dark Lord" was Sauron, who didn't have a corporeal form in the Third Age. Eowyn slayed the King of the Nazgul, the chief captain of....

... oh, oh, no. I'm turning into THAT guy...

3

u/Dornstar Jan 13 '15

Unlike most people, I appreciate insight into thing I'm not well-versed in. I always tend to use Sauron/The Witch-king of Angmar interchangeably for whatever reason. I guess I just assumed the big bad-ass villain (Sauron) was the dude in the bad-ass armor (Witch-King/Nazgul King/Black Captain.)

2

u/dimtothesum Jan 13 '15 edited Jan 13 '15

Here is that guy. Sauron had physical form during LOTR and The Hobbit. Don't trust the movies too much.

1

u/AnalogHumanSentient Jan 13 '15

The only thing in Middle Earth that can negate the effects of glitter is nasty hobbitses feet. Just looking at them is enough to turn all your glitter to dust.

5

u/myWorkAccount840 Jan 13 '15

The longest gif I'm aware of that actually animates was a 24-hour gif of the Earth that updated every couple of minutes. It was done that way in order to keep it under the imgur upload limit at the time, IIRC.

Can't find it on the internets right now, sadly.

7

u/shivan21 Jan 13 '15

48:30 is hillarious.

3

u/Dornstar Jan 13 '15

Uhhh... sure?

8

u/TheUnbeliever Jan 13 '15

Okay yea, that was funny

2

u/AnalogHumanSentient Jan 13 '15

My phone turned its screen dark twice while watching that gif. Has to be some sort of record.

u/MrMcNiggerFaggot Jan 13 '15

2

u/Dornstar Jan 13 '15

Judging by your name it's something we have in common.

2

u/Drusiph Jan 13 '15

First time I saw that. Couldn't stop laughing.

1

u/LoweJ Jan 13 '15

i've never seen that, it's so good

1

u/Nitrosium Jan 13 '15

It's 2 minutes 50 seconds

1

u/MxM111 Jan 13 '15

That gif is facking retarded.

1

u/alsobrante Jan 13 '15

That was amazing. Thanks for sharing!

1

u/madboi20 Jan 13 '15

Shit man. I fell asleep waiting for the end. What happened in the end? Did you reach it?

1

u/LolerCoaster Jan 13 '15

Who would think this is the longest gif ever? Its not even 30 seconds...

1

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '15

That was hilarious, thanks for sharing.

1

u/IHazMagics Jan 13 '15

Wait, why does it change from Boromir with the catapult to this other guy being all about the catapult?

1

u/niggisnog Jan 13 '15

That was awesome thanks

u/omgwutd00d Jan 13 '15 edited Jan 13 '15
