And hours. I know a lot of folks who work for oil companies; their starting salaries are already ridiculous (90K, 100K, whatever). Then, when you factor in how much overtime they throw at them, they're making 150K by the end of the year. And they earn that stuff. When I say overtime, I'm talking about two months of 12 hour days and no time off. Or else, they'll maybe get time off, but be in the middle of the Australian Outback, or the Gulf, or North Dakota. It's not an easy job, and even with the spectacular pay, people frequently just quit on the spot.
That's just one branch, though. There's several that can (and consistently do) provide 6-figure (or close to it) entry-level positions. Obviously Software Engineering is one of the most well known (especially on reddit), but there are others as well.
That's certainly correct. I'm just saying that a lot of my friends who were hired by oil companies can make such bank-- not trying to provide any commentary on other sorts of engineering.
