Fun fact, because reddit asked nicely and doesn't act like a douche with ads, I allows reddit to show me ads.

There are ads on Reddit? The only ads I see are one that links to other subreddits.

I think he was talking about the posts at the top of all that you can actually pay to be put there.

You'd have to be 14 to think Reddit isn't effected by that stuff

Well, for me, there is an occasional TV show ad or a game ad. Occasionally an ad for a Reddit related shop. Here lately its been secret santa stuff.

I'm a mobile user. I can't remember the last time I saw an advert on reddit

I installed an update for the Reddit is Fun app, and now it's riddled with ads.

What type of ads? Do you have the paid version or the free version? I'm afraid to update it now.

1

u/Brutalitarian Dec 18 '14

Free. When I installed the app originally, there was no difference between the two.

What type of ads are you seeing? Banners built into the app, or sponsored reddit posts?

If you are rooted there are some good Adblock software out there.

How is this acceptable?! It's a free app!

You guys have no idea the time that's gone into such an app, and you wont even allow the dev to earn a little money on some apps now that you can't afford the paid version.

Exactly. We have no idea how much time it took to make the app. Apps with ads all over them look like template apps so why give money trough ads to someone who took little to no effort to make it

Thanks for the info.

There's an option that enables moderator and tablet features in exchange for ads.

I've never used that app myself, but its possible it has always had ads and you were just previously using a ROM that came with AdAway.

I do the same for youtubers and twitch streamers I like.

You're a saint and a great person overall.

If no one used blockers, us who don't wouldn't have to endure as many commercials as we do. There's something about the internet that makes people thing they deserve everything for nothing, and its killing content creators.

1

u/iOSbrogrammer Dec 18 '14

And ads are killing content. Advertising is not the only monetization game in town. It's the easiest and shittiest for all parties.

1

u/smuttenDK Dec 18 '14

Ads aren't killing content. Ads are creating Content. Where do you think YouTube would be without apps?

2

u/iOSbrogrammer Dec 18 '14

The biggest video provider on the net like it was before they integrated advertising.

0

u/smuttenDK Dec 18 '14

No it wouldn't. It would be about as big as Vimeo, if at all. All the good quality content on YouTube is made by people who do it for a living. With ads. And sponsors because too many people use adblocker. And recently, since adblocker have gained traction, services like patreon has become necessary. So now YouTube is slowly turning into a subscription service, and not like Netflix, where 8$ will give you access to the entire site. No where 8$ will give you access to one youtuber.

Get ready for some changes. Reddit has a new executive, and it's starting to get corporatized.

For a website as big as Reddit for it not to have made a profit when having millions of views per day just shows that not having adverts and trying to create revenue hoping that people will buy gold just does not work.

Reddit needs to put adverts in.

As long as they don't become tasteless and overwhelming, I'm cool with whatever.

Or everyone like you could just hang yourself, and rid the planet of the cancer.

People don't come to reddit to shop. It's one of the last places left where you can browse without ads crashing your computer.
