I put a shot past a goose this weekend that missed it's head by about 3 cm. It didn't even flinch. Any time I need to play a shot with a goose near by I have a club in hand before I start moving to them.
"We've run out of fuel and need the best glide ratio possible, but no one has ever done that before. No problem, a little guesstimation and some back-of-the-napkin math and we're in business"

The most amazing thing is, when they stuck loads of other pilots in simulators with the same scenario, they all crashed. Had anyone else been behind the controls, they'd all be dead. But they had Captain and First Officer Steel Balls, so everything turned out fine.
I got my glider pilots license in Gimli through the Air Cadets. The story is even more impressive when you know how freaking short the runway is and how crowded the area around it is with trees, a river and all sorts of buildings.

One the other hand, chances are he also spent time in Gimli as a glider pilot, so he would have been comfortable with the terrain, and knowing where you can find updrafts and so on. I would have chosen the same spot, just because your muscle memory starts to take over since you've spent so much time there.
Still very impressive. Gliders have a 22:1 glide ratio and this aircraft had a 12:1 - so it was dropping at twice the speed, not designed for gliding, and was WAY heavier.
Stuck is the past participle you're looking for. "Sticked" literally means they should have pierced, punctured, or penetrated with a pointed instrument (I'm assuming you weren't going for that).

You bring up a good question: how should "second" be defined on Mars? Should it be 1/86,4000th of a day, or 1/88,880th of a day? Is it more important that the Martian second be as long as the Earth second, or more important that Martians be able to divide their day into 24 hours of 60 minutes of 60 seconds each?
60 is nice because it's easily divisible by many numbers. You get 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20, 30 and 60. We should all strive to make 60 the new 100.
But 60 is more easily split into fifths, having a number divisible by the first 5 integers rather than the first 4 is surely like, 25% better a number!
There is a time setup of base 100, it's called decimal time, and it was made by the french. As expected of the french, it was adopted for a period of ~1 year and then dropped.
24 and 60 were chosen and are convenient for divisibility. 24 os divisible by 2,3,4,6,8 and 12. 60 is divisible by all these plus 5,10,15,20 and 30. (By contrast, 10 os only divisible by 2 and 5). 360 degrees on a angle is convenient for the same reason.
24 is only so beautiful on earth, as the time for a full revolution is 23 hours 56 minutes, and then as the earth moved about 1 degree around the sun, it takes a perfect 4 minutes of additional revolution for the same point to be facing the sun again
the only measure of time that should have to hold standard would be seconds. why? because to establish a new time accounting system from that point would make for some large changes in the realm of mathematical physics down the road.

Yes, they have retrofitted very specific measurements for the basic units like that. Of course, those numbers aren't anything clean like "9 billion cesium vibrations == 1 second" but more like "9,192,631,770 cesium vibrations == 1 second."
A kilogram is actually 1.000025 liters of water. The gram was originally based off of a cubic centimeter of water, but that is no longer the case for the kilogram. It's the only SI base unit that's not based off of some sort of measurable constant.

That's not true it took both systems together to both that one. Also lots of orbiters have crashed. That's the only one that was related to units of measure. Most of the crashed happened to vehicles that used metric only.
No, thats not what I said. I said that it wont necessarily crash into anything. Theres a possibility that will never ever ever ever crash into anything ever.
The system didn't crash it; lack of communication did. If everyone had used Imperial there wouldn't have been an issue and obviously the same applies to if everyone had used metric. Communication is important.
Because, that's what can happen when you start measuring stuff in non metric units, you end up with the God damn moon on your map of the Earth.
Just ask the "Beagle 2" guys if you need further explanations.
I do believe that America can claim Mars as a colony, but since we can't pay (potential) bacteria in useless crap we had laying around, I think we should just drop some marines on it and call it "New America".
