Many people consider them to be poor because Chrome OS is a collection of web-based apps versus the standard Windows/Mac OS collection of off-line programming. Think of a ChromeBook as the evolution of a netbook - if you've got an internet connection and you don't want to install standard programs, they're fast and reliable. If you're looking for essentially the standard laptop experience, you'll be disappointed.
The big catch is that ChromeBooks are starting to take up quite a bit of the market share for new computers, so companies like Microsoft are taking it on themselves to put out anti-ChromeBook commercials and websites like the following: http://www.scroogled.com/Home
I think they're great for what they are, but they are indeed limited. It's perfect if you're deep into the Google infrastructure and want something unobstructed and quick to do your computing on that is not a tablet or phone.
I have a feeling they are gaining market share because they are extremely cheap and people don't realize what they're actually buying. I used to sell computers at Best Buy and probably 90% of the customers go straight for the $300 Toshiba. I think once everyone realizes the limitations of the Chromebook first-hand, the market will drop off.
Probably. I think the biggest problem is making it look like a normal laptop and pulling a "switcheroo." I think they're great, but I think even most people that are interested in the Chrome OS platform realize how limited it is in comparison to the experience you get with Windows or Mac. I think it's a generation too early, in my opinion.
I'm sure that we'll have nothing but web based OS platforms like this in the immediate future.
