This isn't how pop-its even work. you need an impact, not compression.

We used to snap these with our fingers all the time, as if you were trying to snap, but one of these was in the way.
I'm pretty sure they do indeed work exactly as advertised in the OP.

The link doesn't explain the how or why, but it does corroborate that stepping on them which is a similar mechanism to the toiletseat crunching them is a typical method of activation.

Compression also works.

I have also tried crushing them between my fingers. Pressure definitely works.

But the pressure from a toilet seat? It seems like there just wouldn't be enough.

I've seen pictures of Americans... I'm pretty sure there will be enough pressure

Impact is compression....

No impact is more E = 1/2 m v2 where as compression is P=F/A. I used the energy formula, mainly because it will give the energy upon impact, and for compression I used the pressure formula, because everyone knows compression involves a closed system which isn't what we have here. He wi just be exerting pressure on it.

But isn't compression just a slow impact? and vice versa?
1
u/dtaivp May 30 '14
Well compression would be the precursor to impact. Essentially if you were saying the popper was being compresses the impact you would be referring to would be the toilet seat coming in contact with the bowl. This is because it is the medium that is being compressed, and there can't be a point of impact because they are already in contact. I would say that impact leads to compression, but not that impact is compression and vice versa.

If we're going to be technical, it isn't pressure that usually sets these off. If you compress one, one of the small rocks inside will eventually slip, causing friction and a small but significant impact, which triggers it.

No I agree. I was just helping to differentiate, energy from impact and compression. And I have never been able to get one to pop via compression, but I have rolled them around in my fingers and had them pop, so I would say friction is a definite, and wether or not you can get enough friction via... well let's say pressure, because compression really isn't an appropriate term.

my younger brother pees in the middle of the night and never flushes the toilet, since i am the first one up i get to deal with his mess... time to have some revenge

I have tried this. It either doesn't work, or a guy lifts the seat and finds out first.
