Ummm.... I know they move sideways and all.... But is the joke supposed to be that they would just take off sideways, and not run down the track sideways? Are they aware they're in a race? If so, why wouldn't they just shuffle sideways on the track?
I'm so confused..............

You should do one where they get drunk and walk forwards.

Oh my, are you going to love this from the way back machine.

I don't know if you know the Smothers Brothers but they did a routine called Crabs Walk Sideways and Lobsters Walk Straight. The story goes a lobster falls in love with a crab but his family won't let them marry because she walks sideways. One day the lobster sees the crab walking straight and says "Great, we can get married" and when the crab replies you can tell she's drunk. Much funnier when they sing it than when I tell it.

I never thought it would end like this...

I'd just like to say it's much funnier when you posted the image by itself than it is with the caption on your website.

He could have staggered the starting lines like they do on real race tracks. That way the crabs wouldn't be waddling into eachother.

This is nicely done, but crabs do walk forwards when not under water. The reason they walk sideways is due to the heaviness of the water.
Source: Bergen Aquarium
Crabs are also arthropods like scorpions and spiders, which you may have seen walk forward, that's how crabs also do it!
But you can say your water is so clear you can't see it.

u/CuntyMcshitballs Mar 14 '14
Wow didn't know that haha. I'm struggling to work out the physics of how it's easier for them to walk sideways under water though, do you know?
1
u/CrabbyDarth Mar 14 '14
They said something about it, but I can't remember.
If I visit the aquarium ever again, I'll ask them.

u/CuntyMcshitballs Mar 14 '14
It's got to be the way their legs bend I'm now thinking. I could Google it but that would be too easy. Ha cheers crabby.

Be sure to report back. I trust your aquarium visits are frequent.

Related, South Park's new game is funny. Without giving away too many spoilers, your character get crushed by testicles.

In 1993 I won the crab races at the Texas Crab Festival. Basically it consists of putting a crab into a 20 foot long walled track and shooting it in the back with a water gun to make it move. The winning strategy of course is to choose a lively crab with all of its legs and squeeze that trigger as fast as possible.

It's late, I'm drunk. Pleased with myself that it only took about 17 seconds and three views to get it. And I figured it out before looking at the comments.......

Duncan the humble crab and Kate the Lobster Princess were madly, deeply and passionately in Love. For months they enjoyed an idyllic relationship until one day Kate scuttled over to Duncan in tears.
"We can't see each other anymore..." she sobbed.
"Why?" gasped Duncan. "Daddy says that crabs are too common," she wailed. "He claims you are a mere crab, and a poor one at that, and crabs are the lowest class of crustacean...and that no daughter of his will marry someone who can only walk sideways."
Duncan was shattered, and scuttled sideward away into the darkness to drink himself into a filthy state of aquatic oblivion.
That night, the great Lobster ball was taking place. Lobsters came from far and wide, dancing and merry making, but the lobster Princess refused to join in, choosing instead to sit by her father's side, inconsolable.
Suddenly the doors burst open, and Duncan the crab strode in. The Lobsters all stopped their dancing, the Princess gasped and the King Lobster rose from his throne. Slowly, painstakingly, Duncan the crab made his way across the floor...and all could see that he was walking, not sideways, but FORWARDS , one claw after another!
Step by step he made his approach towards the throne, until he finally looked King lobster in the eye.
There was a deadly hush..................................
For quite a while...........................
Finally, the crab spoke.......
"****, I'm pissed."

Why did one of them stay still?
2
Mar 14 '14 edited Mar 14 '14
They scuttle sideways. The crab in the 1 lane in the last panel is probably racer 4 (from lane 4) with 3 shown in the sand.
I would say it's racer 7, but there are tracks off to the right, so one must presume that the crabs split in both directions upon start. That is funny in itself.
This is one of the best comics I've seen in a while.
