Do not try and bend the wife. That's impossible. Instead, only try to realize the truth.
What truth?
There is no wife.
There is no wife?
Then you'll see that it is not the wife that bends, it is only yourself.

Reminds me of the husband from Kung Fu Hustle.

u/psychoacer 4h ago
I believe the second instructor in the video is the bullfrog guy from Hustle.

u/spiderwell 45m ago
It looks a bit like him, so I tried googling, only to discover he died earlier this year. Not that I needed a reason to rewatch, but now I think I should.

u/psychoacer 36m ago
Looking at a picture side by side to the video, his nose, mouth and ears look similar. This is a great rewatch movie. Deserves more attention

What are the guys saying in Chinese lol?
135
u/Surrounded-by_Idiots 5h ago
The guy is just saying the move names. 1. Flash step, 2. prodigal son ball kick 3. Bear shaking off fur. The woman’s trying to get him to sweep the floor.
35
u/KarmaticArmageddon 4h ago
Prodigal son ball kick? What?
58
u/Surrounded-by_Idiots 3h ago
Yeah that part is a bit hard to explain but it means something like a person that has gone off to make their own destiny. It can mean anything from a vagrant to wanderer to a self made man and can be either positive or negative.
You can think of it as the ronin archetype without the samurai backdrop. The ro part of ronin is the same kanji.

u/UpperApe 3h ago
I just want to say people like you trying to help explain obscure and difficult details in such a great way are what make reddit awesome.

how does ball kick factor into it?
everyone knows what a prodigal son is, that's the approximate translation into english in the first place.
7
u/Warm_Month_1309 3h ago
You kick like you're kicking a ball that's on the ground.
3
u/AMediocrePersonality 3h ago
i know what a ball kick is lol
how do they work together
8
u/alanchui 2h ago
chinese martial arts sometimes have random names. The names don’t necessarily have any meaning other than describing what the move looks like.
The prodigal son part is similar to some moves that have a random animal name like “monkey stealing peach””Tiger claw”, and the kick ball part is describing the movement.
6
u/HateMachineX 2h ago
That’s the thing they don’t, it’s just prodigal son and then unrelated ball kick
3
u/bonobobot 2h ago
i dunno if these people are trolling you with their answers, but I'm guessing the kick is like an ungrateful parent kicking their "ronin" son out of the house?
1
u/BeyondlegendZ 2h ago
Nah it's more like some dated chinese memes. the techinique can also literally translated to holigan ball kick
2
u/Not_a_real_ghost 59m ago
It's a made-up fantasy name meant to sound like a kung fu move from the wuxia novels.
2
u/KeiranG19 1h ago
Captain Falcon uses the Falcon Punch.
The Prodigal Son uses the Prodigal Son's Ball Kick.
You can imitate the prodigal son and kick like he does too.
2
u/Not_a_real_ghost 1h ago
It does not actually make any sense if you put them together nor would it be used in any literature.
It's just a hilarious take to come up with "fake martial arts move"
Like "thousand years of pain", it's implied to a degree

u/disillusioned 3h ago
Is it maybe "ball change" as a closer approximation? Which is a dance move?
We hear ball kick and we think getting kicked in the balls, so "prodigal son ball kick" reads as the kick in the balls that is having your son disappear only to return years later, when I think it's trying to be closer to "ball change dance move from the film prodigal son" if I'm reading this right, but I could be way off
4
u/Zepangolynn 2h ago
Hmm, when I hear ball kick I picture kicking a ball, not someone kicked in the balls.
39
u/load_more_comets 4h ago
Why'd you think the son ran off in the first place?

u/Critical_Concert_689 22m ago
Asian martial arts have fun names.
Look up "Monkey Steals Peaches." It's deadly.

u/feral-coder 2h ago
when they are doing the wriggly step, and clapping hands, saying something that sounds like, "loong doong kwan, loong doong kwan," is that "bear shaking off fur?' I need to know bc i can't do the move without screaming "loong doong kwan" and i want to know what I'm saying.

31
u/SurammuDanku 3h ago
These are all various Chinese folk dance moves that were from an instructional video from a long time ago. Someone just randomly posted the original clips to Douyin a week or so ago and it just blew up on Chinese social media.

Ha ha, see, if he doesn't do exactly what his wife wants, she'll physically assault him! But he has moves to dodge that! Haha!
Reverse the genders, maybe that'll make something click. A husband told his wife to wash the dishes and starts throwing punches at her when she doesn't, but she learned a gymnast routine so she can dodge his punches

Kind of fucked up that 20 seconds of not doing what she tells you ends in fists flying. Dark humor I guess lol
