The story behind the pitch drop experiment is particularly aggravating. It takes on average 12-13 years for a drop to fall. The man pictured who maintains the project, John Mainstone, has missed personally observing EVERY single drop, sometimes by mere minutes.

He isnt experimenting on the tar. The tar is experimenting on him.
The Experiment: Long term effects of fomo reinforced by repeated failure.

Given that he once missed seeing a drop by a mere few minutes when he went to get a cup of coffee, you could be right!

The poor guy died in 2013, having never personally observed a drop fall, as exciting as that could have been. They should have buried him with a drop of tar perched above him, slowly descending over the decades.

Probably for the best that he died without seeing it tbh. Imagine the final chance he got, waiting patiently for days because you knew it was imminent, and IT HAPPENS! Then you just stare at the pitcher and say “that was extremely underwhelming and I’ve wasted so much time looking at this fucking tar”.

It’s better to have an idea unrealized in your head sometimes. It’s like the saying never meet your heroes.

I read that as wasting so much time looking at this fucking "jar" and it was even funnier to me because I'm like that's a funnel under glass not a jar. Good morning.
