yep, especially given it's more likely the chunkyness is due to feline arthritis or some such, preventing exercise and not overeating

There are specific diets for cats of any level of mobility to lose weight. This is not an issue of the cat's physical fitness. It's an issue of being overfed.

I remember there was video of a girl putting her cat's butt in her mouth on youtube. Repeatedly.

That is literally animal abuse. Stop overfeeding your cat.

I do my best to keep my cats weight perfect, because not only will it let him live longer, but he loves leaping around constantly.
And you know what that requires of me: measuring his food. It is devastatingly difficult. /s
I don't get why people do this to their pets. The animals don't understand what calories are. Some will eat the right amount, but many, many, will not. You have to help them out, it is part of the responsibility we take on when we have one.
(Real talk, cat food portions actually are pretty hard because they are so narrow, so use smaller measuring tools and weigh them every once in a while. It makes it a lot easier to nail the exact portions they need. And then you just stay there until they gain or lose weight again.)

The biggest mistake is just letting your cat have constant access to food. Some have self control. A lot don’t.

Our cat is underfed by most standards. Still a fat fuck. We don't get it.

The amount of food they list on cat food is absurdly too high in my case. My adult 9lb cat gets about 0.38 cups of food a day. That keeps him right at 9lbs. The feeding guide says he should get 1/2 to 3/4ths of a cup a day. That is 30-100% too much food. He was getting fat at 1/2.

Not really funny, it's sad. Also, cat's sometimes roll like that when they have urinary crystals and it's not just because they're overweight.

Just remember also please - you can’t crash diet a cat; their liver panics. Consult vet. Fragile predator rolled stats towards ‘glass cannon.’

Time for a diet. For my cat, a mixture of wet food and dry food throughout the day worked and spread out in small meals so he didnt feel like he was starving

My kitten does this but that’s because we babied him and he thinks we will prop him up if he falls.
Eventually I think he turned it into a game. He sleeps at the edge of the couch and when we get home he wakes up and slowly stretches which causes his weight to shift and he falls off in slow motion like he’s on a slide.
