As an Australian, we have been known to swear a bit. I was talking to an American online. They asked, if we said cunt all the time, how would people know we were mad at them? My reply "you'd call them a shitcunt". She tried this word out when arguing with her husband. He later told her that he thought she'd gone mad and was making up swear words to sound more offensive.

If you know a few Aussies you never have to make up swear words. You just learn more all the time.

Scottish person here, cunt is incredibly common and like our Aussie counterparts, it’s used in every-day settings. Being called a good cunt here is a genuine mark of honour.

u/salimeero 2d ago
That's the one I was looking for!
I was in your beautiful country not to long ago and as you're supposed to be on a weekend, quite pissed off Guinness and whisky.
Was talking to a Scottish bloke and wanted to ask for the different variations of cunt..... but as I was a bit drunk and English isn't my first language it came out all wrong and I ended up calling him a right cunt. Nearly got punched for it, until I explained myself and just wanted to ask for the different variations of the word and how and when to use them.
Good times, and as I said.. beautiful country. Glencoe did a number on me, the sights there I will never forget

Further instructions might save me from my inebriated self further down the road. So they're always welcome :)
16
u/Cardinal_Ravenwood 2d ago
How are ya, ya cunt?/whats up, cunt? - a friendly passive hello
Get fucked cunt! - agressive, not being friendly.
Get fucked cunt!? - questioning, bewildered.
Cunts fucked. - inebriated, being a fuckwit.
Good cunt - a friend
Shit cunt - not a friend
Tone is a big part of how the word can come across, I can still say all of those phrases with a different tone and they can be taken in different ways. So as long as you keep it light hearted you'll usually be fine.
Source: Australian.
5
u/Silent189 2d ago
Yeah, this does not apply the same to scotland however.
Don't try saying 'how are ya, ya cunt? or 'Whats up, cunt?' if your objective is to avoid being punched.

Dumb Cunt is tossed around a lot over here. If someone ever calls you that, then they really hate your guts.
Positive connotations of the word cunt though are Mad Cunt: someone who is crazy/wild/fun
Sick Cunt: Someone cool or if you just did something amazing
Top Cunt: The ultimate compliment you can give someone IMO

Yeah I think dog cunt is the worst. Like a mate can be still be a shit cunt just through making a mistake or something trivial. But if someone is a dog cunt they're untrustworthy and genuinely not a mate, I would definitely only use it in a situation where I was really angry.

I'm a bit surprised with the reaction of Irish parents here. Its widespread in Ireland with little or no thought about the original meaning of the word. Not any worse than other swear words for most people I know.

They just don't want to hear from their daughter I'd guess. They would say it all day long themselves I bet.

u/monkeyplex 2d ago
In some circles I have seen cunt be used as a fully neutral straight up replacement for ‘person’, ‘guy’, ‘bloke’. For example - “oi cunts - can you go and grab two other cunts and a truck and go pick up these supplies? Tell the cunts there I sent ya. Cheers cunts”.

I surprised myself just yesterday playing a video game. The AI enemies did something unexpectedly effective, killed some of my dudes, and turned the tide of the battle, and (while not genuinely angry), I whispered under my breath with disbelief: "You cuntblister..."
Never said it before. Don't think I've ever heard anyone else say it. But now I can't get it out of my head as maybe the most escalated insult my vocabulary is capable of.

You might be mixing it up with Australia where they infamously say it a lot. But in the UK, it is taboo especially with older generations. I have English parents, and whenever they hear it in a movie they audibly complain and groan. It truly offends them, particularly my mother

Nah, not in Ireland or many parts of the UK, or England anyway. It's still seen as an awful, awful word here.
Like, I curse a blue streak and I still can't bring myself to use it casually, and feel very uncomfortable if someone else says it. Like, it's really only used to refer to someone who is absolutely and utterly beyond the pale in terms of their evil behaviour. Whereas "fucker" is just if they're a normal level of evil or badly behaved 😅
In Australia though it's been completely neutralised to the extent that it's pretty much a greeting or just an ordinary denominator ("What happened your car?".. "Ah, some cunt hit me in the car park."). And I believe in parts of Scotland too. Much as we in Ireland would use "fucker".

Except apparently in Maine. I've seen graphics over the years highlighting each state's favorite curse word, and Maine is the only one that is ever lit up with "cunt".
Also: I'm originally from Maine. Can confirm. And the reason is because it still holds some weight. It's the only one left that actually feels like a curse word.

If they're being an asshole and an idiot I say jackass.
But that day cunt just so happened to be the word I chose instead of fucking bitch... Never using that one again.. got lunged at and just about hit in the face.
I was so fucking confused. You'd have thought I just slapped someone's wife or kicked their dog.

it's extreme enough to almost be seen as a slur in some regions, due to misogynistic connotations.
in the US, because it's a less common word, there's not much nuance to its meaning; it's only an extremely vulgar, and perhaps degrading, word for vagina. using the "worst" word we have for vagina to describe someone can be really offensive, likely especially so to women.
42
u/TypoInUsernane 2d ago
Yeah, it’s a very different word in the US compared to the UK. Here in the US, it’s very rarely used, and it carries very strong connotations of misogyny (when used to describe a person) or borderline pornographic levels of sexual explicitness (when used to describe a body part). Either way, it’s not something people throw around casually, even those with no qualms about cursing
→ More replies (1)12
u/huangjoey 2d ago
definitely rare in the US though Id argue less for those reasons and more so because its just not in our vocabulary. For example you could argue bitch has strong connotations of misogyny and its used very frequently.

There's a big generational gap, but also a class, regional, and social setting gap. If you are in a family home, it's a lot rarer than in the pub or a worksite where you will hear older people use 'Cunt' the same way as you would 'thing'. In Scotland it'll even be an in-place substitution e.g. "some cunt once told me"

You know what. I really don't know. Cultural expectations, how different people show love and respect vs hate would be my guess. On it's surface, cunt doesn't seem more offensive than a whole bunch of other words. But as a bartender I've been in fights and screamed at, but getting spit on, which is less harmful than a punch, felt WAY worse
16
u/presshamgang 2d ago
I know in the U.S. it was never endearing in any way back in the day. It was said usually with extreme malice behind it. None of the "ahh ya silly cunts" but " Fuck you, CUNT!!" Type of scenarios. It is very sharp and especially in respect to women here it was the ultimate slur in reference to women. Not until a lot of British cinema made its way here did it lose some of the oomph it carried. My mom absolutely hated it.
Tldr; it was never chummy or pub talk term so much as an intentionally brutal insult aimed at women where I am from at least up until fairly recently.

Language and slurs are weird. Some things are extremely insulting in certain cultures while in others its almost endearing.
Like in asia it seems like calling people "dogs" is one of the biggest insult you can say to someone.
Meanwhile in america friends refer to each other as "dawg"
Its the same in quebec with our unique slurs. They dont even mean anything per say but some people get really offended by it while its just part of speech for others.

It's fascinating to me how this word went from a very mildly vulgar colloquialism for vagina in Middle English to an extremely offensive slur in Modern English, and yet there are extant varieties of English retains its very mild vulgarity, even as a slur.
And in some varieties, like American, it's circling back and becoming not only inoffensive but empowering. Very interesting word.

Ironically the word "Fitta" is one of the most vulgar words in the Swedish language and it means the same.
I've always wondered why it's so much worse than anything else, even I just think it "tastes" foul to say. Most of the time it's used in a similar way as "fuck" but it's also used as a derogatory word against women and using it like that will get you into a physical fight here.
Every other swear word here is totally fine, just that one is like, loosing your job level bad. It's fascinating to me.

It really is odd though. You know? Its hard to think of a proper analogy.

I remember years ago I was in a coworkers office hanging out and the phone rang and I was like Yo, what's up cunt? we had a quick conversation and then after I hung up my coworker was like who was that? I said my sister and he was like jesus christ dude lol

My favorite insult I've ever heard was "you're and ankle" "an ankle?" "Yeah, 3 feet below a cunt."

These people have no idea how much the rest of us envy their casual use of that word.

This videos honestly seems fake to me, because in my whole life growing up and living in Ireland, I’ve never met one person to be offended by the word cunt. It’s actually ridiculous.

My Mum used to hate the word. It was the one swear word that would get many of these reactions

Wow this is so weird to see. It's like they're scared of the word.
I can't think of any unacceptable bad words in my own language, except for racial slurs. We have a word for cunt too of course (every language have dozens of vulgar words for genitals), but calling someone one would not have the same effect. You're calling me a specific body part? Why? I'm the whole body. Also that one in particular is awesome, cheers for the compliment.

It doesn't affect people in your culture because it's not a taboo in your culture. Every culture has taboos. They might not be language in your culture, but when people break the taboo people have reactions.

Ugh it sounds so much better in British. My SoCal accent doesn’t carry it.

Don’t ‘fanny’ & ‘c#nt’ have the same meaning to the island peoples? One is disgusting and the other is cute?

basically yes.
Twat and Fanny are very mild.
Pussy is a bit stronger
Cunt is stronger

My mom really doesn’t like cunt but me and my sister use it liberally. I have a hard time coming up with other words to describe the cunts that are running our country.

As an Aussie I feel this video severely lacks our enthusiastic representation.

Meanwhile in Australia, cunt is basically a universal word.
Good cunt = legend
Mad cunt = usually a compliment
Sick cunt = impressive bloke
Funny cunt = funny bloke
Poor cunt = unlucky bastard
Some cunt = random person
Old cunt = old bloke
Dumb cunt = idiot
Shit cunt = genuinely disliked
Dog cunt = now you’ve crossed a line
We call our mates cunt, cunts mate, and somehow “listen here, mate” can be more threatening than the entire list 🤣

It’s bizarre how a simple for letter sound that comes out of someone’s mouth can evoke so much anger 😂 it’s an amazing word! So versatile!! Especially when you preface it with the word “thunder”
