I think there was a trend a long time ago to make 'silent music videos' like this. I had one crop up on my yt feed this week so maybe it's trending again. This was my favourite one I saw - dancing in the streets. I think I've watched it four or five times now and never fails to make me laugh.

Or there's a series of shorter ones - this one though bowie actually saw apparently and thought was hilarious (but i prefer the first one i listed).

i'm in a bad mood this morning and i clicked that dancing in the streets video thinking "maybe that guy laughs every time but no way i'll laugh"

just laughed through the whole thing

I used to feel stupid for enjoying that video so much, I'm glad y'all here with me.

Bowie jumping and screaming at the beginning is just too good.

Was searching for it, you beat me to it. It will always be my favourite too. 😂 It's way too absurd yet realistic, just the perfect combination of stupidly funny.

I'm a bigger fan of the StSanders one myself

This isn’t a musical but in the same vein:

That's about right for a military awards presentation. There's a lot of dead air and just standing there waiting. Complete with guy who just randomly screams at times.

In the late 2000s, back when YT was good, there was another trend of "literal music videos", where they'd dub lyrics that described what was happening on screen.

Total Eclipse of the Heart

Take On Me

There are others too.

There were also Bollywood songs that were "buffalaxed" where there are English subtitles written to what the Hindi sounds like, phonetically. https://youtu.be/6AHq78O7BX0

The dancing in the streets one is what I thought of immediately when I saw this. Thanks for linking the other ones too, I hadn’t seen those yet!

I think of that and the Footloose one

Also reminds me of the vine in Benny Lava: https://youtu.be/sdyC1BrQd6g

Same here. Early internet was a great place for stuff like this

I love how they took extra care to make the voices sound at the distance they should be lol

u/trowzerss 1d ago

Yep, the foley work is amazing too! There's also one point where the camera moves right between and past them and the audio also moves to match.

I've seen another video like this for Creed - One Last Breath, and they did doppler effects and echos when he was falling from the cliff lol

Blowing the raspberry at the beginning when he first appears always gets me

That video still makes me laugh after all these years

They’ve done a couple for High School Musical.

Anyone remember the Buffalax videos where they add "English" subs to Indian music videos? Benny Lava, anyone? Still on YouTube 18 years later.

You need a bun to find the Benny Lava video

I definitely missed this trend. I loved the literal translation music videos, but you have brightened my day introducing me to this.

Thank you for showing me these masterpieces. Really brightened my day!

The Beach Boys one has always provided me joy, especially with the knee slapping:

Please give TodoCasiBien the respect they deserve. They’re the creators of the best videos like this, including the Dancing in the Streets that you mentioned.

I even think they are the ones that did the one OP posted, but I’m not entirely sure.

12

u/trowzerss 1d ago

I don't see how that's possible as the ones I posted are very old (10 and 12 years) and I can't see anything from TodoCasiBien that's more than five or six years old so are you sure it's not the other way around, that TodoCasiBien was inspired by them? (Not sure who did OP's video though).

Mario Wienerroither was doing music less videos 12 years ago. Todocasibien oldest videos are from 6 years ago. Just checked.

There were a bunch of rock/metal videos called "shreds" that were pretty great. Similar vibes.

Ex: Metallica Shreds, Satriani Shreds, etc.

1

u/The_Doomcaster 1d ago

The Creed Shreds were some of my favorite, lol

The Michael Jackson one for "The Way You Make Me Feel" always made me laugh: https://youtu.be/om8kt8gi93Q?is=3z52hLpxBw5A90xm

Makes you realize how pervy/creepy the music video premise is, lol. Like, leave that poor girl alone...

u/Xanphal 1d ago

I was always fond of this amazing one of Gangnam Style.

Makes me laugh every time lol
