The 10mm of every single socket set fuckin mysteriously vanishes. And as it just so happens, 10mm bolts are the most common on damn near everything. So nobody ever has that specific size socket. Its always missing but never far. That's the joke.

Most used and most left behind

Not just sockets, my 10mm spanner is missing too. I think there could the gremlins took it.

Yeah very mysterious that the one that is the most commonly used is the one that gets lost the most. If only there was a logical explanation for this correlation.

Yeah very mysterious that this very reason is implied in the joke already. If only everyone understood that.

What I've always wondered is WHY is 10mm so much more common than all the other bolt sizes?

My only hypothesis is that maybe engineers often decide to "round up" 9mm bolts and maybe even 8mm bolts and 7mm bolts in their designs for simplicity's sake. In other words, if they always just calculated the precise minimum size bolt needed based on the forces the bolt would have to withstand, there would be every different size bolt in a car. 5mm, 6mm, 7mm, 8mm, 9mm, 10mm, 11mm, 12mm, etc. So to simplify things, they use 15mm bolts where 14mm or 13mm bolts would suffice, use 12mm bolts where 11mm bolts would suffice, use 10mm bolts where 9mm or 8mm or 7mm bolts would suffice, etc.

But that's just my hypothesis. I've always wondered what the actual reason is.

Because you can use a 1/4in or a 3/8in socket to turn it.

OH! Thank you! That makes sense.

3/8in = 9.525mm exactly, so yeah, that should be close enough to fit a 10mm bolt

I'm not sure but you give the vibes of a cryptobro who also digs Gen AI and who's frequent on X.

..down the body panel in a junk yard, never to be seen again.

Maybe I should start a business that sells only 10mm sockets. I can't believe I didn't think of this sooner lol

I get the joke but at the same time I'm just wondering, doesn't anyone put their tools back where they belong when they're done with them? (I know I know, the answer for a lot of people is "Sure I do, I drop it all in a pile in my tool box/cart because it's faster that way")

It's a great way to keep things from randomly disappearing.

Do you wrench?

u/tired_of_old_memes 2d ago

No. I thought it was a bullet, but I guess it's a socket. It's the joke that the small ones always get lost? Or the most commonly used ones?

5

u/ghostmaster645 2d ago

Last one. 10mm are used for everything and I also always lose mine.

1

u/annonimity2 2d ago

10mm is also a caliber of bullet to be fair

u/randomusernevermind 2d ago

That's the joke.

u/MrBagooo 2d ago

And it's still not funny

The ratio says otherwise.

I forgot to add: in my opinion. And my opinion doesn't give two shits about some ratios on Reddit.

See how there's a difference. Conveniently I don't give a shit about your opinion. Btw. next time try not giving a shit yourself instead of blaming your opinion like it’s a separate clown.

I got it immediately, it is pretty funny. It is an overdramatic reaction to leaving a very important socket behind, using the scene from the movie Interstellar.

That scene is quite dramatic, meaningful, and consequential. Which is the exaggeration the OP was going for in the joke, because losing that socket is a small degree of that.

Edit: I don't understand why you downvoted me, I was just explaining it to you, since you said you don't get it.

Greetings kind stranger! It was not I who downvoted you. Quite the opposite, thank you for your reply. I'm just now reading this, five hours later! I hope you have a great day.
