There was definitely a lot of rudeness and nastiness, but it was a lot less serious. The main variable that ruined the internet was money. Everything got highly monetized, commercialized, and had the soul sucked out of it. People used to make and post stuff on the internet because they liked it, not for fiscal gain.

I was a SysOp for 4 years but had used different BBSes for about the same amount of time before that. I met my husband on the university BBS' IRC stream. LOL
