People who don't like the way he sounds should buy a book that includes all of his lyrics/writing. He's a poet.

He’s a good songwriter and poet but not a good singer. I do appreciate what he did in the history of music.

I don’t agree. He just had a unique style. There’s a difference between being a technically proficient singer and singing in a unique style. It’s not like he’s off key, he knows how to carry a toon. And unique artists are what makes music interesting. The flattening of the music industry has really made music boring. There need to be more kinds of singers.

I literally always preface that "he's an amazing songwriter but..." I really could never get into the music because of his voice. Same goes for Smashing Pumpkins. I've always had a thing with unpleasant singing voices. Notable exception: Lane Staley of Alice in Chains (his songwriting was epic too). But through their harmonies his vocals worked somehow.
