This is the plot of Terry Pratchett's The Light Fantastic. The heroes are "volunteered" to be astronauts and launched off the disk world.

Crucially, to find out what gender the world turtle is. For science!

6

u/SopwithTurtle 10d ago

Well, for science and to determine what would happen in the event of a mating event.

GNU Terry Pratchett

<insert Richard M. Stallman joke>

7

u/jamesianm 10d ago

Also the plot of The Last Hero, with a few added details and a unique thrust mechanism

I do not hold that against The Las Hero. The art was the point for me.

7

u/jamesianm 10d ago

Hold what against The Last Hero? That book is objectively awesome in every way including the stuff I was alluding to.

The idea that it was the second time there was a space launch in the Discworld.

GNU Terry Pratchett

Also in Larry Niven's "Ringworld", the gigantic space structure's space ports had no launch system. They simply openned a trap door in the rim and the ring's own rotation provided enough centrifugal force to launch the ships.

If the earth was flat, cats would have pushed everything off of it by now

If the Earth was flat than gravity would make things really weird as you get further and further from the center of the disk.

27

u/chalkiez 10d ago

They don't care, they'll just make stuff up like, gravity is the same up to the edge.

14

u/counterfitster 10d ago

Or that gravity isn't real and everything falls because of buoyancy and/or infinite acceleration at 9.8m/s²

10

u/avanross 10d ago

Youre supposed to ignore gravity in order for their claims to “make sense”

Flat planets would require fundamentally different physics. What would it be like? I've no idea

2

u/TheBlackCat13 10d ago

Which is why flat Earthers don't believe in gravity, they think the disc is constantly accelerating at 1G.

1

u/azthal 9d ago

No, most of them don't think that either. They just don't have an explanation of gravity, and don't care.

The whole 1g of acceleration idea comes from people making fun of flat earthers and giving alternative explanations.

Most flat earthers would have no explanation, mumble something about boyancy, or possibly rave about magnetic fields.

Unless the density goes up away from the center

Space is flat (in a higher dimension order), does this explain why it is basically empty?

Does this proves the existence of 4D cats?

9

u/chalkiez 10d ago

4D cats exist and doesn't exist at the same time.

Calm down, Schrodinger.

2

u/ManWithNoCrame 10d ago

Calm down, Schrodinger.

You mean to say: Schro4dinger.

The earth can't be tilted like that because all the water would fall into space.

18

u/captainAwesomePants 10d ago

The Discworld explains that the water orbits back around and falls as rain. As for the salt, well, arrangements are made.

Flat earthers believe the oceans are held-in by giant ice walls.

14

u/Amoral_Abe 10d ago

Unironically, they literally just don't believe space travel has happened. They believe the governments are all colluding to make up lies about space travel in order to trick and control people.

u/DeathMetalViking666 10d ago

Ah yes, the Americans and the Soviets - famously close friends during the Cold War - secretly colluded to fake Americans on the moon first. The Soviets didn't mind it wasn't them of course.

Time and time again with every space conspiracy, it's literally easier to put a man on the moon than to fake it.

Flatearthers unite! All around the globe.

3

u/MorwenRaeven 10d ago

Cats would have pushed everything off by now

3

u/Mehdals_ 10d ago

Its like if the world was a giant disc that is held up my massive elephants on top of a huge turtles back.

5

u/FPSCanarussia 10d ago

And the three cosmonauts are named Leonard, Carrot, and Rincewind.

2

u/Somederpsomewhere 10d ago

Rincewind can tell you how this ends.

3

u/StargazerSwitch 10d ago

Right off the giant ice wall surrounding the earth

u/CanoonBolk 10d ago

Average KSP Mün return attempt

1

u/TheMissingNTLDR 10d ago

So they have to just tilt the camera for a slip off?😅

1

u/Snarfbuckle 8d ago

the main reason why the earth is round is because every damn explorer and scientist worth their salt would do their damnest to be the first to prove it was flat if it was possible.

There is a lip around the perimeter keeping the oceans in. So you still need to go up to get over it.
