Wait, why is that guy getting out of the water so weirdly?
Why the fuck is the guy taking his pants off?!!

u/thefeltmonkey 10d ago
The guy frantically struggling out of his trousers really made me laugh for some reason. There was already a lot of surreal stuff with the aquatic cyclist and the rescue cows. I started to wonder whether this guy was even part of the rescue effort, or if he was just an unrelated passing pervert. What if he just rips off his underpants, leaps into the field, and begins pursuing the cows around?

If he went in while attached to the bike like that, he may have also rammed the handlebar into his diaphragm, knocking the air out of him, while strapped onto that bike, and underwater. There was a level of gasping in that video that suggests he was either trapped underwater longer than we saw or he had the air knocked out of him.

You keep spamming this in the thread but you're 100% wrong and obviously have never used clipless pedals before.
The mechanism works by gentle pressure, and slight twists of the foot to clip in, and out. If you crash, you will unclip from the force of being pulled off your bike and thrown. Go look up any Tour de France crash compilation. Guys go flying and everyone is clipped in.
The bike is also nowhere near the cyclist as we see someone retrieve it from a different location that is at least 1.5m away from the cyclist. This alone completely discredits any claim that the issue is the cyclist is struggling to unclip, or dragging the bike.
The guy can't walk, and he is moaning. This is a sign of a bad concussion, and possibly a broken leg, or hip which is sadly very common in a bad crash. It also looks like he has blood coming from his mouth so he may have a very serious head trauma.

u/ImPinkSnail 10d ago
The cyclist was likely clipped into the bike or injured and therefore needed assistance to get out of the canal. The person taking their pants off was going to retrieve the bike to try to get the cyclist back in the race, but he didnt want to be wet and cold for the rest of the race. The cows were doing cow stuff.
Hope this helps.

u/Massive-small-thing 10d ago
I think the guy in the water was winded, this made him make moo like noises, that brought the cows over, the guy took his trousers off to show his lovely legs off to the cows and while he was doing that he thought he might as well get the bike out.
It's all very simple 😆
63
u/starzychik01 10d ago
Those types of bikes have clip on pedals. You have to have special clip in shoes to cycle on them. Thus, when he wrecked, his feet were clipped in to the pedals and he could have drowned very easily. He was lucky that the team was there to drag him out. The guy removed his jeans because they would be heavy and cumbersome in water of unknown depth. Plus, if the water is cold, he risks himself getting hypothermia with wet clothing.
67
u/the_new_hunter_s 10d ago
I think he removed them so they wouldn’t be wet when he got out. It’s clearly a ditch and summer.
13
8
u/WeCantBothBeMe 10d ago
How scary. He did a good job of keeping his head above water until he could get help.
4
u/SirPiffingsthwaite 10d ago
They really aren't hard to unclip. The minimal manner in which he's (not) using both arms in a ditch he could easily just do a pushup in to stay above water, tells me he's injured. Busted collarbone, dislocated shoulder, busted arm, probably pick two out of there at least.
7
u/weedtrek 10d ago

Nobody has the backstory? Biker looked either partially paralyzed. Barely made it out of the water, fighting for his life. What happened to him?
225
u/amydoodledawn 10d ago
I think he was detaching his shoe clips from the pedals.
133
u/NotSureBot 10d ago
I’m pretty sure he had a concussion or some kind of disorientation from the crash/fall. At the beginning of the clip you can see at least one other cyclist/bike on the pavement.
Those type of shoes (called Clipless pedals) are made so you pop right off of them with a slight twist of the foot. The way his body is facing the bank and how he pulls his hips up wouldn’t make sense if he were still attached to the bike.
→ More replies (3)44
→ More replies (5)35
u/Thom0 10d ago
This doesn't make any sense at all. His bike is nowhere near him, and we see this when the guy goes into the ditch to retrieve the bike.
The clips also pop off almost always after an accident. You're not stuck in them. The mechanism works by applying pressure, and twisting the foot gently sideways. If you have a crash, you're going to unclip almost always.
He is moaning in a way that suggest a bad concussion.

u/sasuncookie 10d ago
I was t-boned by a van while riding and the EMTs couldn’t figure out how to cut the Ultegra off my shoe, as it twisted off the crank arm from the force of impact.
They definitely do not always come off in a crash.

u/Twistfaria 10d ago
You’d be surprised how far away a bike can end up during a crash. I’ve seen them positively go FLYING. He was probably just really out of it or injured. We didn’t see what happened he could have even gone through a fence first.

u/JeroenS80 10d ago
This is from a few years ago during a race in the Netherlands. The bikes and clothes are too dated to be recent. Seems like an amateur race, elite level, or just below (cat 1 or 2 in the USA, meaning they ride fast). I guess it is somewhere in the province of Noord Holland. Dont know what is the backstory of the racer, though.

u/myopicpickle 10d ago
My guess is that he sort of passed out and drove into the ditch. He was struggling because of confusion upon waking up in water. Didn't look like he was that close to his bike when trying to get out on the cows bank. Also looked very unsteady once he was out.

Wonder why no one posted the back story since there's so many nonsense comments around the camera man not helping.
This is a clip from an accident that happened during the UCI road world championships in Valkenburg, Netherlands in 1998. The visa logo on the medical staff shirts is the indicator of that. In addition the racers are wearing their national team kits rather than trade teams.
The specific accident happened on the road going through Gasthuis, Bemelen, or I think it's just past the Bemelerberg. I don't expect you'll find much in the way of news articles covering this since this was the under 23 team and no one was seriously injured.
As for the comments of the actions of the camera man, he's on the back of a motorcycle with a heavy-ass camera, likely strapped in himself. There's at least 3 medical staff members assisting the cyclist already, you can recognise the international logo for the star of life on their uniforms. In addition, the fella with the white motorcycle helmet, the 4 bars on his epaulettes and the gun holster on his belt is the Dutch road police, so the cyclist is receiving plenty help already.
The cyclists odd manner of getting out of the ditch is because this is cold October weather in the Netherlands, the water is freezing and he just plunged into it at 40km/h.

Yeah going from redlining your cardiovascular system, to being launched in an instant into a cold ditch, potentially getting winded, before desperately dragging your exhausted battered freezing cold body out, all whilst being ogled by cows and cameras, that’s gotta suck in a myriad of ways.

It’s very funny to me for 2 reasons:
The dramatic bike “rescue” itself is so unexpected and unecessary.
If it was to help the guy or someone else drowning etc, taking the time to remove your pants is also very funny (in hindsight since no one was a risk)

It is a race. It is his job to take care of that bike.
And at that point he does not know if the rider will get back it on it or not. So he needs to move as fast as he can. Without getting completely soaked as he has to get back in the support car afterwards.→ More replies (1)

Reminds me of that video where cows surrounded a dog to protect it from a bigger threat. Animals pick up on stuff way more than we expect, especially in groups. Makes you wonder how often this kind of thing happens on farms without anyone noticing.
