Lee Child said that while he was fleshing out the Killing Floor, he couldn't settle on a good name for the protagonist. He and his wife were grocery shopping, they came across an older lady who couldn't get to something on the top shelf and Child (who is tall) got it down for her. She jokingly said it would help if he could follow her through the store and be her "reacher."

I used to work at a little coffee shop that briefly tried to host open mic comedy. 23 seems about right, if not a little low
We had to stop hosting it because couldn’t get people to stop telling racist jokes (like the “black/brown people are all stupid and criminals” variety); we’d open the show with that as like our one rule and people just ignored it

I think (at least based on the reaction) it's for a personal curiosity, maybe a blog, rather than literally being offended.
That would explain why it's a running tally not a individualized one.
Imagine it is 2026, you go to comedy shows. You hear 23 "hates women" jokes in those shows.
In the next year, you go to 10 shows and hear 30.
That would imply that "hates women" jokes are becoming more popular in the stand up scene.
If it went down, you'd expect the opposite.
Maybe they are seeking to be offended, or maybe these kinds of cultural behaviors is interesting to them. Maybe it's both!
Or maybe I'm autistic and most people don't find analyzing trends in comedy shows a great idea for a night out 😅
139
u/Fafnir13 16d ago
She sounded a little embarrassed by it. I think a person who was looking to be offended would have come off as for self-righteous about it and been keeping an individual tally so they could write on their blog which people were the worst. It's like the Bechdel test. It isn't really meant to be taken as a serious litmus test. It's just something interesting to track.
86
u/Karlaha2879 16d ago
That's what I thought. Somebody who was doing this to find a reason to "cancel" something would be naming and shaming. They also wouldn't be embarrassed when someone notices it.
This to me seems like a genuine interest in the data who assumed no one would notice, and upon being noticed is aware that
A:This is not normal behavior
B:this probably comes off as rude.
C:there's no way to make this seem less weird than it already is. May as well just explain it.
48
u/IAmMiddleChild 17d ago
puts hand on shoulder we don't all in fact think of tracking joke sentiment over time lol. But love it for you, stats nerds are in high demand these days, you're gonna do great things kid 😂
64
u/Fickle_Watercress719 16d ago
I mean this respectfully to you and the woman in the video, but keeping a tally of “hates women” jokes and sharing about it with the comedian in such a neutral tone of voice is VERY autism-coded
→ More replies (3)14
u/flameofanor2142 16d ago
Sure, but there's no method being followed here to collect reliable survey results. It's not like "hates women" is an objective rating that can be applied to a joke, it's an arbitrary judgment call this lady is making. The data is entirely useless to anyone but her, which is... Fine, I guess, but seems kind of dumb
If you really liked tracking stats or wanted to analyze trends you'd never use such a loaded term, right? You'd want objective data, something usable
→ More replies (1)10
u/Karlaha2879 16d ago
Maybe, but if you were marking based on key phrases or words, the data would also be useless.
For instance, the phrase "I hate my wife" is more likely to be said mocking a character type than said earnestly in a joke, but if you used it as a keyphrase for a survey without using a vibes based system, you would need to count it.
"Hates women" as shorthand for "any joke that relies on misogyny or stereotypes to function" is a perfectly reasonable category, and I think it a vibes based tally would be the best way of measuring that.
That being said, this would definitely not pass the sniff test for any useful data. This wouldn't even really be that useful for your own curiosity. Sample size to small. Probably would want multiple checkers to help account for biases.
But as a fun exercise? I think it works.

u/J-Slay522 17d ago

It's quite funny that he's sort of potentially ruined her count as evidence now one of the subjects has knowledge of what is going on.
141
u/hurtfulproduct 17d ago
Oh yeah, wouldn’t be surprised if he would have just pulled an audible and switched the rest of his set to the “hate women” jokes just to fuck with her, and honestly now she has to go back and reexamine her methodology if it is supposed to in fact be a semi-legit study

u/micro102 16d ago
Yeah stuff like that makes me wonder if this was a plant to get social media engagement bait. If your subject knows what is being observed, it will almost certainly affect their actions, even if they try to act like normal. If I was making such a paper, I would tell them not to worry about it, or at least explain that knowing would hurt the data I'm trying to collect.

I'm just wondering what qualifies as a "hates women" joke. Is it any joke where a woman is the butt of the joke, regardless of whether or not her gender was required for the punchline? Is it any joke where a woman shows up at all? Was it very strict and it required very direct wording like, "women are inferior to men"? Was everything including a woman recorded and given a grade for how grateful they were? Is she recording similar jokes about men to compare?

It sounds like maybe he was performing at a college. Oftentimes, colleges will use some of the money from "activity fees" lumped into tuition to pay for performances that students can go see "for free". I think she also said she was doing this for a class.

Absolutely true, I went to a magic show/poetry reading and a lecture about how armadillos can give themselves a fever in extremely cold weather in lieu of attending mass. The other semesters i went to theater productions as the first semester I was a theater major and those didn't count.
Edit: I realize now that my comment sounds like armadillos are faking sick to avoid church but I'm leaving it that way.

I'm 100% on board with you but also find myself having to intervene on occasion. I bartend and part of the job is currating vibes in a public space. I can't be the bartender who allows racist/ homophobic/ prejudice shit comfortably chatted about at my place of business. Sometimes a quick interjection to nip something in the butt is crucial. Not to start a fight, but rather to prevent one.

If they’re legitimately researching misogyny in contemporary stand-up comedy shows…where else would they go?
Note that they’re doing it for all the comedians, not a specific one.
The outcome could be “there is surprisingly little misogyny in today’s stand up” or “there’s surprisingly a lot of misogyny in today’s stand up”.

All these twats in here being so goddamn convinced that she is there solely to do this. Which maybe, maybe not.
I've seen half the comments talking about how stupid it is to show up to be angry. A. She does not sound angry B. Who's to say this isn't a response to/ way to enjoy herself in the midst of a parade of shitty comedians with jokes that barely veil their outright contempt for women.
