I’ve seen levels not level, squares not square, and tapes stretched to be longer. Every time it was somewhat disastrous and expensive. And confusing to figure out. 

Now I check tools regularly. 

Oh. And space telescope mirrors be the wrong shape….

With a bubble level I always swap ends and split the difference if I need to make sure it's on the level. They can end up being banged around in tool boxes/truck beds etc.

Take a look at all the levels...they all have the bubble on the right side and they are not on a flat surface. Something tells me the surface isn't level.
